So lately I have seen these fish eggs up for sale at Verimark, PnP and other stores. I then wondered is this really Killifish, would it be safe to purchase these, what type of Killifish are they and would it be a good idea to purchase them and hatch them and keep them in my communal planted tank??
No. You would get more a thrill tossing your money into a fire. Killi eggs have a shelf life. Unless the packet says when the eggs were collected there is NO guarantee there would be live eggs in the packet. The incubation period is, in general, about 12 weeks for most species and once they are fully developed they can wait about another 4-8 weeks depending on temperature. After that time the fry die. If you want to try some killifish eggs I can sell you some eggs of Nothobranchius ruudwildekampi Mbezi River TZN 09-8. Guaranteed to be at least 50 eggs. What does PnP/Verimark charge for a packet of their eggs? I'll match their price. This is a relatively easy species. The fry are large, they grow fast, look good and the adults happily eat good quality flake or granulate food. Fry still need baby brine shrimp. The incubation time of the eggs is 6 to 12 weeks at 22-24 deg C. For info on raising the fry see: http://tgenade.freeshell.org/myfish/begin.pdf (the short version) or http://tgenade.freeshell.org/killibook/index.html (the long version). Kind regards
They ask R100 for the starter kit, bowl..eggs....and some other stuff, i dont think they add a heater!
This is the ultimate commercial ripoff, you have no idea what you are getting, and you would not know which fishes these would be. I find it absolutely amazing that this thing has slipped past the National Biodiversity Institute as this makes no sense. Get some eggs from Tyrone and then you get reliable eggs which you know what they are and then you have fishes that you can at least cultivate and grow with the necessary information. Kind regards, Dirk
All the Nothobranchius and South American Annuals need temperatures of about 24 deg C to grow well. If you can't provide the heat you are just wasting your money. The only exceptions are the Austrolebias species of Argentina and Uruguay which do best at about 15-18 deg C. Eggs of N. ruudwildekampi sell for about $10 for 30+ eggs on the internet. I'm happy with R60 for 50+ eggs. You pay postage. You don't need brine shrimp, microworm will do.
FYI, this is what the Nothobranchius ruudwildekampi Mbezi River TAN 09-8 look like: The photo was taken with a flash.
Okay definitely intrested, but one problem I do not have any micro worms, could it be possible to add that into the mix as well a starter pack of microworms lol... BTW I do like your signature @tyrone
Hi guys, I, unfortunately (?) was one of those that had that thrill It was an impulse purchase. When I saw the strap line "Real Live Fish" (or something like that) it crossed my mind that these fish could only be some species of Killi. And being me (very curious), I bought it. After going through the books at home, I realised that I knew too little in order to raise these fish properly, hence the internet search that LED me to APSA. I've been reading the articles on the forum for the past few days and they have helped greatly. Anyways, miraculously, these eggs have hatched! I've counted about 10 tiny fry swimming about. They're about 3-5 mm long. The included instructions said to wait 36 hrs, so I will wait to see if more eggs hatch (but don't have much hope for that happenning). The thing is, the brine shrimp that i've started feeding them seem to be about 2/3 the size of the fry. Will the fry be able to eat these ? Should I try and set up an infusoria culture ? Help ...
Most fry can wrap their mouths around the baby brine shrimps. I feed baby brine shrimp exclusively and have had only 4 species which needed smaller food. These are not species you are likely to find on sale for R100 (they normally sell for about $40-60 excluding shipping).
Thanks Tyrone. It eases my mind knowing that they will not starve! I'm very curious to see what species they turn out to be.
