Dosing the water column will always be preferable to root fertilization as your plants unnecessarily waste energy at root level to break it down. This is particularly problematic in a newly planted setup where the plants may be cuttings and not (have) fully established (roots) yet..., ...or where you may be trimming and replanting cuttings.
