What can I put in a standard 1ft tank to eat algae? Tank is 30cm X 22cm X 22cm. Effective volume is around 13 Liters.

    What algae do you have?

+1 on the Ottos, especially for diatoms

Had a really bad breakout of diatoms in my 18'/30l. Got 4 of these guys, 2 adults and 2 juveniles. Diatoms are no longer a problem and I have maybe fed them 4 or 5 times in 2 months. Make sure you have some plants in the tank for them

    For the 1ft I'd say 1 otto

they are schoolers and do better in groups, so agreed, one would probably be enough to handle all the algae etc, but they do better with company, most people recommend at least three, you will just have to feed them then, baby marrow, algae wafers etc.

    Good advice

I started with 2 and they weren't very lively and active. With the 4 that I have, they regularly follow each other around the tank

    Thanx all.

Was thinking of an otto but didn't know if the tank was big enough. I cant stand putting fish into a too small tank. I get claustrophobic on their part. I have 2 in my planted 3ft but will have to get another one there since the algae is a bit faster than them. I didn't want to get too many of them and then they starve.

I'll try and find some in northern JHB.

I agree they are schoolers but would rather keep the guy in solitary than overpopulation...

Otto's are your best bet for a matured aquarium, in the mean time a normal algae eater will do, as long as you remove it when it gets bigger!

No they dont, moonlight gouramis do a good job but i would rather look into whats causing the problem than just treating the symptoms... Good luck!

I had a problem before with BBA and Mollies did the trick. Never to return to my tank.
But in that size tank I would not recommend Mollies or Moonlights.

the only method to get rid of BBA is manual removal. the reason for its appearance in the tank is probably caused by fluctuating CO2 levels.
