i had stopped dosing nitrates to try and get my reds to redden up, but that brings the cyano back, got some small patches on my substrate again... aarrgghh, will start with KNO3 again...

took some more photos, just because you get a better camera doesnt mean you will take better shots... full tank shots are so hard...

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio ( update 11032009 )

    Still looking really good.

The HDR came out ok too, I gave it some thought yesterday, and I think the problem is the lights on the tank. They aren't bright enough to give you the full range of tones that the sun would (not sure if that makes sense). But you can still see somethings in you HDR pic that you can't see in the previous one, particularly some of the details in the crypts (I think) on the left in the shadow.

I'm guessing you blended different versions of the same raw file to do it?

    thanks ryan

yup, same versions at different exposures, the fish were all in different spots in different photos, and the ghosting correction wasnt working too well...

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio ( update 11032009 )

    Looking real good dood!

I like the HDR pic. It carries alot more detail and just "pops" more than the conventional jpg. The ghosting is a slight distraction.... I think it would work better with no fish and brighter lights, like Ryan already mentioned.

Not exactly sure how this HDR thing works, but I will most definitely still read up on it and maybe even try it myself.

Your plants look absolutely stunning man, well done!

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio ( update 11032009 )

Raymond, that HDR shot you took, did you have a single RAW file to work from or did you use the 3 image tiff/jpeg route?

Regarding the exposure, was yours manual or was auto exposure bracketing used?

One last quick question, what app did you use to composite the shot?

I have Adobe CS and something they call "PhotoMatix", which can apparently also generate a HDR image. Very interested in
    trying it out for myself...

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio ( update 11032009 )

@ silikube - i took a whole bunch of shots, at different exposures i set manually, and then did some bracketing - but even with the bracketing, the fish swim too fast to get them all in the same spot. i used photomatix and even with its ghosting removal feature, used for people walking or water moving, the fish still didnt look right. so i used a single raw at different exposures. i set the aperture and shutter speed manually

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio ( update 11032009 )

I like the earlier HDR shot. I think maybe one inbetween this and the first one would look pretty kewl.

I tried a few shots today of just random crap, but it did not come out as good as I expected.

I am using jpegs as my camera does not have a RAW option.
    Not giving up just yet....

Have a look at thisfirmware enhancement, which unlocks a number of hidden easter eggs on the Canon PowerShot line.

i added some rocks, not sure if i like them yet, i will wait and see if they grow on me... dutch layouts arent supposed to have rocks are they? i guess it is more a natural dutch layout :)

    what do you think?

maybe i need some more small ones to carry on the theme...

the two different types of rock are a little distracting IMO, also the plants need trimming, again IMO. otherwise vice nice.

I really like the rocks, but I agree that you should rather use 1 type. The one on the left (that seems different to the other three) is really nice.

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio ( update 26032009 )

i havent gotten around to my first hard trim, i am still building up the courage, maybe on sunday :p

i kinda like the full look too though...

the rocks are all pretty much the same color in real life, with the same textures, it does look odd in the photo though... like i said, i am going to see if they grow on me -like fungus :)

if i do trim on sunday i will have loads of trimmings, i will post on the trade thread - first come first serve...
