after the leak and soon to happen teardown of my 200l tank i decided to get a new tank... i was contemplating taking a break from the hobby for a while, but i am no quitter.

i will be using the flourite, plants, fish and filter from the previous tank to setup this new one.

here is a pic of the tank i bought, it will be delivered tomorrow.

it has two 54w t5 tubes built in, i have got a reflector for the one tube, need to get another one still but they only had one left. i am going to see how things go with just these two tubes, i will probably have to add another two at a later stage. the tubes it comes with, are one "day" tube at 9000k and one "nature" tube at 4100k. together the light is quite natural looking...

    the size is 151 x 51 x 62 cm.

i will document the setup here as i progress so stay tuned.

The tank was delivered yesterday, it comes with a built in internal filter, a big black box glued into the back right corner, it was such an eye sore, and quite big.

i used some cotton to cut through the silicon, and then cleaned it off with a razor blade, i will continue to use my external canister filter rather.

I would also like to hear your feedback on this. The tanks really do look nice and I have been eyeing them for a while.

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio 400

@R.C. - the tanks itself looks really good quality with beveled edges and black silicon, but the lid is made up of three parts, the light fixture that forms a central rib across the width of the tank, and then two plastic flaps that attach to the light fixture. these are really thin and seem quite cheap, but when they are closed the fit nice and look really smart.

the stand is the normal supawood you find with most tank and stand combos but also looks really nice.

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio 400

they are a bit on the expensive side, this tank was 10K, but it is nicer looking than the jebo, and hopefully now i wont need a bigger tank.

i have heard people saying: always buy the biggest tank you can afford up front! i should have done that, and i think the bigger the water volume the more stable your setup will be...

i have bought another two bags of flourite, i wont be adding the peat plates this time, it interfered when planting, the plants seemed to root nicely in it, but it wasnt easy to make a hole for the stems...

i am also going to skip on the laterite, i will dose iron in the water column if i need it.

so my substrate will be pure flourite with some volcanic rock dust. i will add peat granules to my filter for the discus...

Where did you get the Flourite from? Has AK got a new shipment in?

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio 400

i got it from animal kingdom in atterbury, i took the last two bags of plain flourite, they still had two bags of flourite red...

it wasnt where it used to be at the back with the rest of the gravel, it was on the right as you walk into the fish room, with all the tubing...

    Re: 400l Juwel Rio 400

First pics! been setup about 48 hrs...

still waiting for the water to clear 100%, i didnt wash the new flourite, i just added the washed flourite from my old setup on top and filled it up slowly, it wasnt too murky from the start. my plants from the previous tank took quite a beating, so hopefully they will start to recover nicely. i definitely need more light, the tank is not very bright at all, i am at about 1 WPG...

i havent added any hardscape this time except for a small piece of driftwood for my gold nugget... i am going to try a natural dutch layout.

@dougb - thanks man, it just needs to fill in a bit. the plant is an echinodorus parviflorus,

anyone know what the red plant on the right is in the second last pic?

i added two of my old setups 39w tubes temporarily, until i get some new tubes...

you can see the different colors of the tubes here:

    1. arcadia plant pro 39w 7400k
    2. juwel day 54w 9000k
    3. juwel nature 54w 4100k
    4. arcadia plant pro 39w 7400k

the two 39w are noticeably brighter than the 54w, arcadia are making tubes to fit the juwel range now too, might switch to those at some stage...
