thanks guys.. i want to DIY the lights but not sure where to buy t5 balasts etc.. else i might just buy ready made ones.. still searchin.. anyways, i fitted the filter last night.. was such a tight squeeze it nearly didn fit! my heart almost stopped! anyways i can see maintenance being a B*tch... its fine though.. fish will be happy
I got my DIY T5 stuff from Quality Aquariums - might be worth while trying to send him a PM ? He organised my ballasts, solid core cable and end caps. He then posted it directly to me so I didnt need to go and collect......
Gee now you making me think.... I bought them a few months ago ( so it could be a little more now ) but if I remember correctly prices were roughly as follows; 54W dual ballasts +/- R200 each 24W dual ballasts +/- R175 each End Caps ( I bought normal, not waterproof ) +/- R12 each Solid core cable +/- R1.50 per metre Shipping +/- R120 to bedfordview, so I imagine yours will be similar....
i didn.. im going to redo them some time (that may just mean never hehe..)i have a plan though.. im going to drill the circle further in (on the door) so that it pulls the doors bit furthur apart..then i can tune it right.. well thats the theory..
filled the tank to see if there are any leaks or if the cabinet will fail.. 3days and counting.. no problems.. except the doors! i know im complaining.. just cant stand them.. will redo them soon washing gravel in the meantime
Thats a very interasting bunch of wood you got in there - is it all one piece or a whole bunch of smaller branches ? Also what type of wood it is ( if you know ) ?
its lots of small pieces..i been preparing the wood in my pond for a month or so now.. bought from animal kingdom atteburry.. 50-60 per kg!! so flippin cheap! think if u like this u should go capitalize on it now! im not sure if the price has changed though.. bought it a month or 2 ago.. not sure on type of wood.. but ive seen others use in their tank with no problems.. at first they float but after a while they sink.. they light in colour but after soaking, they become a nice dark redish brown colour..
ok, every day there is progress! got my lights.. now have to build canopy.. a few pics of the lights being tested.. 4x54w is very bright the wood grew this weird fungi.. what should i do? was thinking of just leavin it and see if it goes away?? and heres a rough sketch of my cannopy: i want to build it out of supa wood and alunimium.. tell me what you think..
Wow man - Looks great ! I'd just leave it for now.... just give them a good rinse ( with a hose pipe or pressure cleaner ) before placing stock in the tank... others might disagree though... we'll see !
Get a bristlenose or three to clean the wood. There is still some soft unrotted wood on the outside. The bristlenoses will take care of it. Do a water change first... How high is that canopy above the tank? Check Greystoke's reflector model to get the most from your setup. For ever 30 cm above the tank you lose about 75% of the light intensity.
thanks for the info tyrone.. i'll skcub off as much soft wood or bark then.. i did notice that it grows more on the bark.. as for the lights, im going to hang them.. im going to try put them as close to the water as possible..
I don't know. That is about 548 W/m2 over the tank. It is a lot but some people have this much light and have lovely tanks BUT they pump loads of CO2 into the tank. Personally, I wouldn't go with more than 150 W/m2 but that is because I don't want to mess with CO2. I guess if it looks like it is too much light, then you can simply raise the lights. At 1 ft from the tank you would have about 500 PAR striking the water surface. From 2 ft you will have 125 PAR (assuming 1 PAR/W which is pretty average).
