Congratulations! I have had Rams spawn many times in my tanks but they have never been smart enough to get the eggs to survive never mind actually raise fry. Granted, they always had to content with a busy community tank... All the best with the new spawn. Ram parents are pretty but stupid.
@tyronegenade - I've read up on what a challenge it is to breed rams and was quite surprised the first time I saw that mine bred and still managed to look after the fry for some time. I think they died due to being under fed as my cousin couldn't be here each day to do so. I have quite a thick layer of peat under the Flourite and I think that's prob what's making the water soft for the rams to breed like rabbits. @lloyd - Here's a pic of the current batch of eggs: And here's one of the survivors of the first batch:
Shot bru! I still think the previous male was much more beautiful but I suppose this new one will do for now
Rams are ready spawners but more often than not they fail to look after the fry. Most of my spawning attempts have ended up with either the eggs or fry vanishing. I have got fry by removing the eggs but I don't like this. The fun of cichlids is watching them take care of the fry. I also think that this makes for healthier fry. So, congrats on breeding Rams without much intervention. They must really like your tank!
Thanks Tyrone, I hope this batch will make it maturity. I noticed the eggs were gone yesterday but the parents just moved them elsewhere, as per the norm. I found the nest a few moments ago and they've hatched. Here is the pic: Will keep you guys posted on developments. Ciao D
I just focus on the BBA nest haha. Kidding cool i just got 1st hand experience in raising apisto fry. Not to easy. Hope you get the rams to maturity.
Most definitely bud, the first target is to get them mature lol, yeah....need to get that BBA gone. Thanks, hope they do make it. When I switched the tank lights on this morning, I've noticed the parents are now guarding the nest more actively. Also noticed about a few fry that is free swimming but the majority of the clutch is still wrigglers. Starting the BBS hatchery later when I get back home.
Ok, just got home and all the fry are now free-swimming with their parents. Here they are: 1st day free swimming Setting up BBS now; will have hatched by tomorrow. I managed to catch the 3 remaining Blue Tetras, so I'll be putting them in my spare 60l which will eventually become my mudskipper tank. Laters D
Yeah, it's a fairly big clutch. While I fed the fish earlier, one of the Blue Tetras managed to get in the middle whilst mother & father was at the bottom and managed to eat about 4 or 5 before he was driven off. That LED to me catching the 3 tetras and removing them from the tank. The lone cardinal though poses no threat and remains on the side of the tank.
Howzit guys Sorry, been occupied with too much work in recent times. I successfully raised about 14 of the original batch of fry (the veiltail type); of which only two (M+F) I've kept. The rest have gone to a well known breeding farm @Schalk - Didn't forget about your request mate...will sort you out on the next batch as they've bred a few times as well and I think they're gonna spawn within the next 2 weeks again. Ciao D
