I met Roy Nagatoshi this weekend. He is credited with creating the bonsai's for Karate Kid III, and funnily enough he looks a little like Mr. Miyagi. It was a 2 day event hosted by Shibui Bonsai Kai at the Floreum in the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia. Day 1 was a styling presentation with Roy working on trees and demonstrating techniques. The before and after differences were amazing. He also did a saikkei tray planting with pelindaba rock and seeing him placing the rocks I was very conscience of all the iwagumi principles and how they just seem to come naturally to these guys.. Day 2 was for 1 on 1 sessions with Roy helping individuals to improve their trees, and also the before and after differences were crazy! I was then treated to a private viewing of the Brenhurst gardens, the trees there are fantastic! Tomorrow night is a dinner with the Southern Bonsai Society, where Roy will help the clubs members style their trees. This is what aquascaping in South Africa needs. A renowned aquascaper to come and give a few workshops and demonstrations, i think this would go down really well!
yeah, we still discussing the new boards those trees werent from this workshop, just a pic i found on the net, so you could see what he looks like.. i have some pics on my phone, i havent checked them out on my laptop yet to see how well they turned out.. i took quite a few pics of the saikkei and the other trees, i will review them tonight and see if there are any keepers..
there are so many similarities between bonsai and aquascaping i am surprised there is not more crossover..
Love bonsai. Got given one as a Xmas present last year and so far, its still going strong. Haven't bothered doing any trimming and shaping Would love to plant some sort of moss or hairgrass with it
I've always been interested in bonsai. Just never got around to doing anything about it. Anyone know where one can do a nice bonsai course?
You are very lucky to have met him. Do you know if he is coming to Cape Town? My Japanese Maple needs some help and no-one here seems to know what to do with them.
Its funny that most of the guys that like planted tanks also like Bonsai, maybe its just an overall love of plants. I also like Bonsai, just never tried it before.
I'd also like to try it one day and maybe incorporate the 2 hobbies like this: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=3720
Sean maybe I should drop by this weekend and then we take out those maple trees, check this link in no 9: http://www.bonsaiempire.com/great-bonsai
i am not a huge fan of jin's and shari's on junipers.. even though they occur naturally i do not like them..
