There is a huge demand for aquasoil, espesially that a lot of people are jumping on the Caridina shrimp wagon. The problem is that the petshops needs to order and say pay R10k for their aquasoil before delivery. Sean then imports, after there are enough orders to fill a container. But some petshops do not want to go that route and I am sure Sean does not want to sit with a warehouse full of stock. I understand both partys concerens here
Does this mean the end of Scape as well ? I'm sure Dirk or one the other smaller importers will be keen, be it not as a full scale registered ADA importer or at least get in an alternative shrimp and aquascaping substrate.. Perhaps we can start a list of interested customers here as a starting point ?
Not sure about scape Trevor. Sean only mentioned it last night on the JHB whatsapp group about the planted tank and ADA It will be great if somebody can bring some soil in, be it AS or any other shrimp soil. I have only had great results with AS and shrimp, its just the cycling that takes some time and there are just as good other shrimp soils that dont leach so muchammonia
Ok thanks, must be a recent change of plan that news, as last week his partner in crime suggested that Sean was trying to make it happen ?
The problem is he only supplies LFS and so on. He needs to change that and sell directly to the public - that will most likely solve the problem in my opinion
Yes no shops are serious into aquascaping or shrimp for that mater and difficult to convince them, they can't even maintain a scape that the Planted Tank kindly set-up for them. In the Cape we don't even have water to fill our scapes, so marines are a serious option ?
dealing with the public directly is kind of irritating and not worth it in my experince, far too much of a mission.. dealing with one or two bags at a time and ever changing plans and pick up times by clients... If there was a better demand, local regional reps to push the product might have helped, but then more middleman involved and the price goes up..
He tried that before...and a was more of a headache than anything. It's the same reason wholesalers dont supply to individuals directly either. If you order from ADA, they have minimums...so if Sean orders the R100 000 minimum, he has to sell it ASAP to keep costs as low as possible (so he doesn't have to pay storage fees, etc). That's why retailers make their markup...they have to buy from a wholesaler to share the risk as they'll be sitting with the stock. It works this way with all products...not just ADA. The Planted Tank is the wholesaler/importer of ADA...much like DARO is the wholesaler/importer of Eheim, AD of Seachem, etc, etc Plus...selling 1 or 2 bags...even 10 bags to an individual isn't a drop in the bucket of the minimum order that needs to be placed (and that makes the freight cost worth while)
Hi folks... Yes. It is true. I am shutting down The Planted Tank. I am not going to be importing aquasoil anymore. It was a very difficult decision, however it was necessary for me. Unfortunately supplying only 4 or 5 shops does not warrant the import, and I cannot deal directly with the public if I am supplying the stores. Scape will continue to be developed into a comprehensive aquarium product lineup, and if all goes according to plan, we will have a lot more products than just liquid fertilizers and water conditioners. Thank you for all of your support over the last 5 or so years. Sean Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Exactly, @Trev Pleco. By selling directly to the public, just like Betterweather, The Planted Tank will have better sales and stay afloat for a long time. Why sell to the LFS when they aren't bothered to take care of certain bonuses? Most of them just want to make money and really don't care - it's all about the money, cheaper sells quickly (even if it's crap quality). I know this one LFS in PMB that does really take care of their animals and I think they have a few planted tanks too but their tank for selling plants is a real let down. I've asked a few times that they put up a list of what is in the tank of "potted plants". Nothing gets done about it - also sometimes the staff are clueless to what plants are in there actually, they don't even know the name (I once bought rotala wallichii, they said something else and I can't remember what it was). And you can always find a way to clean and recycle old tank water if there are large water shortages, which is a problem for your area, Trev. I would suggest using a filter unit - the ones you use for filtering your tap water to drink. The membranes are meant to filter out any waste - carbon membrane and the usual membrane. I want to try this so that I can get away with having to do water changes.
Fair enough, I understand your point. Specially for customers who order or want this, only for them to pull out of the deal. Which is why I made everyone pay in advance for the Osmocote so that no one will pull out of the deal and I'm not left with issues to deal with. Say for example - someone can import a couple of bags - if say out of 100 bags - the person who wants it, must pay in advance and then wait. That way there are no losses incurred and no deal breakers either.
100 bags isn't nearly big enough to justify an import. Remember, unlike the osmocote which was sourced locally, to import a product on wholesale the seller has set minimums. A company like ADA wont pack 100 bags, it's a waste of time for them. We had the same issue when we imported the fish...if a wholesaler (and they told us this) ships 80 boxes of discus to the USA every 2 weeks, why would they ship 1 or 2 boxes to SA?? The amount of work is exactly the same (permits, driving to the airport, etc) Unfortunately, if the pet stores dont get on board to act as the buffer between wholesaler and the public...something like this will not work.
Well done for your efforts Sean, you introduced us all the ADA range which is to be highly commended, not to mention taking the trouble and expense with setting up many an LPS tank and encouraging the local hobby. Look forward to seeing the Scape range develop and who knows there might well be an ADA Amazonia Scape equivalent waiting to be exploited in Africa ?
Guys i am willing to do this as i have 500k to lay out but payment needs to be in advance and only if a substantial number of people order. maybe @Sean can give me a heads up. and if it is worth such a task
I'm just saying as an example, I have no idea of what it takes to import a certain range so I'm not qualified to tell anyone what to do. Seeing you have made your valid points, I don't blame Sean for shutting down. Sometimes you try and then it doesn't work out eventually like you had hoped. @Trev Pleco: LOL ADA Amazonia Scape, now you're talking.
