most commercial dog food contains fish combined with all the other necessary vitamins, is this seriously worth the hassle and trauma for a few flapping fish ? I doubt they would be breed so rapidly to feed and sustain your large dogs unless you exchange them for chihuahuas :)

I feed mine goldfish and koi all the time, saves a trip down to the shop for 'damn' dog food :)

I have now trained one guy up to catch his own food when I'm away..

cool, as long as they have got lots of hiding places and lilies, as there is a host of potential predators lurking close by.. herons, kingfishers, reed cormorants to name a few.

    watching this space ...

They got logs, some floating plants, and the tanks are deep.

I placed two per 1000L tank, and then put 4 in the huge pond.

The 1000L tanks will have a mesh.. the pond/dam the will have to make a plan.

Basically, they are there to eat the mosquitos.

I will also buy white cloud minows for the pond, and will look for gambusia, they will do good there.

Yes good call, Mcs are rewarding especially when you see the little males displaying in the summer sun. I can get you gambusia as soon as it warms up and I start displaying .. :)

    Hi Luis,
Let me know if you want some "other" plants - I have found some floaters (they seems to be a bit of a weed) and another type of "strange" lilly nearby my home while I was biking around.....
Let me know, then I'll go and get you a bag full....
    Cheers

I don't know about that Luis...I've had goldfish in my pond for years and can tell you that I always have mosquitos. Its a small pond with one of those gravity filters. During spring and summer, every time I open the filter to clean the sponges, I release a batch of newly hatched mosquitos as they escape from the filter. I suspect they lay eggs I the pond that then get sucked into the filter where they eventually hatch out. Maybe I feed them too often but my goldfish (and previously Koi) seem to be vegetarians...

Neither Tilapia nor goldfish will reduce mosquito larvae. Mosquito fish - Gambusia affinis! Now that's a top class mosquito muncher.

As for mixing goldfish and banded tilapia or even Oreochromis mossambicus (blue tilapia) - be sure that all your goldfish are bright orange! Any dark-coloured fish will be harassed and mutilated by the cichlids. I had black moors shredded by banded tilapia but all other bright colours were left alone. It's a dominance thing - note how the small bullied oscar is always dark and tries to hide in the top corner of the aquarium to avoid being harassed?

I can vouch for that. Put some small, newly bought goldfish in with my adult tilapia, in my ignorance. The little goldfish were all gone the next morning...

The goldfish will not be fed anything else, until they eat the mosquitos. If they do not eat the mosquitos, then they will be placed on the pond, and I will place white cloud minows in the 1000L tanks. :)

Where you based mate.. :) I will buy them from you.. floaters I know Hyacint is a plant that will destroy the pond if given a chance, but the good thing is that they can be placed in the ground as fertilizers.

    Hi Luis,
    Based in Durbanville.
Yip, water hyacinth is the one, it does take over, nice article on how to make the best out of a problem..
I''ll go and collect some of the "lilly" tomorrow and try and load a picture of it.
The plants are not for sale, it's free....
