    Hi all.

I just joined the forum. Little bit about myself and my tank: Capetown, married, 2 kids (1 and 4). I have a 400l display tank diameter 1.2m (l) x 0.6m (h) x 0.5m (w) stocking freshwater fish with plants. I use Seachem's Flourite substrate, Fluval 405 external filter and heater, running 3 x Glo lights (2 x 40W Aquaglos and 1 x Plant Glo) and there is space for a 4th light. I have no CO2 and "occasionally" uses Seachem's Excel and Comprehensive Supplement. The lights are currently running 9 hours a day from 13:00 till 22:00.

In terms of plants I have Anubias (both small and big versions) and Vallesnerias, which I've managed to grow successfully but the tank is still missing something and the plants aren't flourishing.

I would really love some advise on how to improve the current plants, what plants I can add and what I would need to make them flourish. Seeing that I have a family and a house to look after, time is limited, so if there is a solution not requiring that much time, it would be beneficial. Also, in terms of new gear, I don't wish to spend a fortune.

seems like quite a lot of light for those anubia..

    1. I think you need some stems to counter that algae! :)
    2. Your flourite is currently going to waste.. Its only really effective when plants are planted in them.
    3. Consider getting more flourite / similar. Your substrate level is very thin..
    4. You need to start dosing to see better results. the likes of Seachem Florish, tropica (the green bottle) and others.. or go to the EI thread (method for dosing fertilizers for your tank, economically and locally available) and mix up your own ferts :) check it out here:

    5. Check out my site www.betterweather.co.za for more plants. :D
