Part one of making a canopy Tank size 910 * 320 * 400 Bought the wood from Penny Pinchers 2 lengths of pine 1500 * 144 * 22 and cut them to size, 2 lengths of 950mm (inside length if cutting at 45") and 2 lengths of 340mm, this leaves enough space for pipes and cables etc, i cut mine at 45" but Penny Pinchers can't do that but it works just as well if you cut it off square( If cutting square the length is 990) You now have your 4 sides and i like to assemble them using corner blocks. Once assembled you can now measure for the lid. I also put 3 corner blocks along the inside of each length to support the canopy. These i put 45mm from the bottom edge. Also i drill holes in the back length for wires and ventilation. I then take every thing apart again and put on 2 coats stain (Nova Antique Oak or Mahogany) and 2 coats varnish, first coat thinned with some thinners I reassemble using glue in all the corners and paint the inside white, 3 coats first one slightly thinned with thinners (Dulux Brilliant White) During pre assembly i cut the canopy to size as we don't always build square, i glue and screw some cover strip round the edges for strength and to take the hinge screws and also 2 pieces in the middle for light fittings, then i paint the centre white. It is easiest to use piano hinge to attach the lid The bottom pieces measure 960 * 92 * 22 and the 2 sides are 335 * 92 * 22, these i have just screwed into the wood under the tank How it all fits, as you can see i used a small length of wood to support the box under the corner blocks Costs 2 lengths of 22mm pine R65 each 1 Cover strip R30 I fortunately had some 6mm marine ply i used for the lid but you can use a 22mm pine board at about R170 Hope this helps all you guys out there that have asked about this, am doing one for a 1.2 and will post that to
