Hey guys, thanks for sharing your findings here. Question will adding some of the red LED's not improve plant growth quality and what ratio would you do to the elite white? 1/3 red to 2/3's??. Or not needed at all?

You could add more red LEDs but you would end up with a tank that isn't visually appealing. One plant physiologists mentioned to me that warm white LEDs gave him the best growth; and Greystoke & my research suggest that aquarium plants want the blue light as well. For my LED experiments I have opted for Nature White and the plants seem happy.

I think Wolf's advice about the Elite LED is good advice to follow.

Cool, will do, I will experiment a bit as I have a couple of these strips. See pic of the additions to my Juwel's central ballast, There's a 14000k (left), 2 x Elite white (middle) and one warm white (right), from the standard T5's the increased output is up by +/-70%. I have some other strips that I will experiment with, which include a red and blue. I know the placement of the LED's isn't ideal but its does assist. If you own a Juwel tank the options are limited, it works perfect for me, as I can still work in the tank, remove the entire lighting unit in one go, and yes I like a closed top tank for multiple reasons. I did you secure those LED strips? Looks really neat, well done. I found the 3M tape mine came with to be of a terrible quality. So I used to hot glue to locate it properly.

Used clear selotape at every 100mm centres between the LED's to keep them in place along with the 3m tape, been running without problems for 2 months already.

That warm white looks like a different model LED: 3528 instead of 5050 like the others. The 3528s produce a third as much light as the 5050s and the 5050s produce a third as much light as the 5630s strips. I am using the latter and a single strip over my tank is enough for Elodea to thrive and Bolbitis to pearl.

Where did you source the 5630 strips? I will be replacing the 3528 strip this weekend, got another cool white 5050 strip and warm white 5050 strip to play with. I'm leaning toward using the warm white more simply for a different variety of colour array. I couldn't source the 5630 locally. All plants seem to pearl quite well.

On another query, the previous supplier I bought the 5050 elite white strips from rated a 4,8 watt/m, the ones I got now simply called 5050 warm white 60pcs/m are rated at 14,4 watts/m??. I'm so confused. So i got a 60 watt supply as a precaustion to replace the current 30 watt thats currently running the above. Can anyone sheed some light (no pun intended) on why this is so??

Yeap - they are very quick, I suspect they source from sites like aliexpress.com (this take 6 - 8 weeks)

But it is nice to order something today and get it tomorrow while you can still remember what you ordered. (BTW do not fall into the SAPO trap no clue it will take if you do that. I ordered some T8 replacements also so had to go with the courier.

BTW see http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/s...ED-light-chips&p=287624&viewfull=1#post287624 I actually managed to play with a few of the LED - I really need to give credit to FishPanda for finding improved living's site.

Since the above I have removed the milky diffuser from the T8 - WOW, will never get anything but clear in the future. For the first time I am even see some colour developing in my plants.

Looking in lading some bulk strips form China .. it is like 3-4$ per 50cm strip on aluminium - I reckon one should be able to do a 4 ft tank for less than R400 all-in.
