Yep I am also a hosepipe in the tank guy. Saying that my fish are considered "hardy" so thats maybe why I am not so pedantic about it. I add Dechlor after the tank is full

no dude.. you have to.. one day the chlorine is going to be excessive in your tank and ALL your fish are going to die. trust me. a bottle of prime is less than 150 and will last you much more than a year. dont risk it. chlorine is a killer.

R150 is nothing considering what you stand to lose. even cheap dechlor is fine

my friend was also doing wc without dechlor for many months. then the one day, almost all his fish died. trust me, its not worth the heart ache knowing you could have done something to prevent it..

Maurice also told me that on fridays they put more chlorine in the water for the weekend. so friday wc, you have to be very careful too

Guy on TASA wiped out his hole display tank of Malawi, just remember chloramine you do not smell like the old cholorine they used to put in and ask Azurekoi what happened to the one Koi pons when a worker added water and it killed almost all the fish.

eish, i dont like adding water straight from the tap - what about the temp? My tanks sit at 24 degrees but my tap water is much colder.

I keep the bucket of water I have taken out and then mix hot and cold water till it feels more or less the same temp. Never gona be perfect but it's a better than straight cold water! My cold water is also freezing this time of year!

Some more questions for you, young Andrew ;)
If you make the new water the same pH as the tank water (which is lower because of the AS) and add it to the tank, will the tank water become even lower?

By how much does AS drop the pH?

I woke up this morning worrying about pH crashes and killing the fish and it suddenly popped into my head... RAYMOND, his name's Raymond - ::) I am so sorry. Please forgive me...

As for my question above, I realise it sounds a bit stoopid - I know if you mix pH 6 water with pH 6 water it will stay pH 6. What I am asking is what's the lowest AS will drop the pH?

Would a pH buffer defeat the whole point of AS?

    mine dropped to 5..

we have Zero KH in capetown so i should have used buffers ect.. anyway problem is sorted now.

your pH will only drop as low as your tank allows. KH buffers water, AS softens water

Wen you add prime to your tank. And tap water you have to dose for the full volume of your tank and not just the water you add.

When i do a 50% WC, i add the prime after removing the 50%, then start to add the new Tap water via 10L bucket. I keep my sub filter running and pumping in air into the tank the rest of the day along with the CO2.

The next day its back to normal. CO2 in the day, and O2 at night! no feeding for the first two days!

guys, im not too clued up with all the chemistry that goes on when doing the wc. but what i do is that i do max 50% wc weekly with no ill effects. it was only because i did a 60% water change that one time that i had major issues. i didnt consider substrate, hardscape and plants- with these, my 60% wc was more like a 80% water change..

so dont worry abt it, do your 50% water changes but be smart and logical abt it.. i had to learn the hard way :(

I also lost fish when I did a 80% WC due to Temp / pH shock or the combination, now I stick to 50%
