So with my son on the way I decided to shut down all my half hearted attempts at scapes and decided to do a little tank dedicated to the little guy. My wife was very pleased to hear this as my two existing tanks in the house was moved out of the house and sold over a course of a month ( had some second thoughts and had to take my time to depart with the old tanks ) .

So I bought this little tank:

    Tank specs:

    Starfire tank with dimensions of 30 l x 17 w x 19.5 h

    Update:

So yesterday I had some time on my hands and I stripped the cabinet and took it apart.
It was silver before and then it was sprayed white but it wasn't enamel, so I thought seeing as I have a tin of enamel in my garage I would use it.

Due to the white not being enamel it didn't stay clean for long and was difficult to clean it, so here is some pics of the before:

HC can you maybe tell me where I can buy two of those units and what I'm looking for price wise?

Do you stock them at your shop?

Dymax is sold by VIP pets. About R200 if i remember correctly. Nice thing is it comes with a 15W 6500K, but you can upgrade them to a 23W globe.

Okay so some progress was made and this tank setup was 3 weeks ago...

I used some ADA Powersand S at the base of the tank and added some Bacter Ball in the filter.
Next I played with some rock placement, used some Dragon Rock:
    IMG-20150516-WA0006.jpeg

Wasn't happy and changed it a bit:

    IMG-20150516-WA0008.jpeg

Looked plain and added more rock and changed it some more:

    IMG-20150516-WA0019.jpeg

I was happy with this layout, seemed natural and the rock placement added great depth perception. I could see that some moss and HC would go well with this scape and some Biboltus would also complement it if I added it in the back corners giving it more depth.

So planting started and I added the following plants:

    Christmas Moss
    HC
    Biboltus

I wanted to keep the plant selection to a minimum, this tank is small and its difficult to add and later on trim in the small spaces.

Water was added, sorry for the stained water, but for setup phase water wasn't that bad...

And now about 3 weeks later:

    IMG-20150602-WA0010.jpeg

It was running on lighting of 6 hours per day, have no algae issues thus far and crystal clear water.
As of yesterday I increased the lighting to 7 hours per day. I will adjust this again in future to 8 hours a day.

    I am dosing the following:

    ADA Green Brighty Step 1
    ADA Brighty K
    Scape Liquid Carbon

I am using double the recommended usage on the tank.

    Water changes:

100% was done everyday for the first week
    2nd week 100% WC's every second day
3rd week 100% WC's every 3rd day, this is where I am at now.

I also dropped the light a bit to help with penetration, currently it has a 15 W CFL 6500K in, I will upgrade this by the weekend to a 23 W 6500K.

Really enjoying this tank, waterchanges is done via airline tubing, works well. If I use anything else its too hectic and I have floating plants.

Filtration is ATMAN HF- 0100 HOB filter with a small 25w heater... Heater looks massive got to admit but its actually as thick as my index finger (I do not have big hands)

    Thanks for reading/watching

Thanks @Linxie, was really difficult to scape as this little tank is only 17cm wide, but was a nice challenge.

@Luis Embalo deceptive indeed. It's smaller than my nano, yet looks much bigger... that's a job well done @HC :)

Isn't the bolbitus going to be a problem when it settles down?

Whoops. Sorry. My bolbitus has got huge so I thought in a tiny tank like this it might overgrown the scape...

Trimming the larger leaves should help keep it in check :) I think because it is a slow grower, it'll be easier to maintain.
