The Experiment - "Nano" tank

    I wanted to do a small experiment with various substrates using comercially available potting soils.
    The rules are simple: Identify a mix that you think might work, use it in a small setup for about 3 months and see how well it works. No aditional additives allowed except sand to cap it off.

    So here is my first try.
    Substrate: African Violet mix and riversand.

    Step one - Layer African violet mix on the bottom

    Step two - Cap off with riversand

    Then time to plant it with Eleocharis Parvula.

    Fantastic until I added apple snails. They pulled out all the parvula.
    Note to self - this substrate mix does not anchor plants very well. That is why the snails keep on pulling the parvula out.

    So out went the parvula and I replanted. This is what it looks like now.

    I'll update as often as possible.

    Fantastic stuff! This type of experiment is just what we need. If only I had a spare warehouse to do all the ones I'd like to...
