    Hi Fishmark,

The company is called "Stendtker" not Stenker or stienker. They are being brought in all the time in any case by importers. Just for your information.

In my opinion, they are good solid and healthy discus. However, nothing exceptional on the colour or strain side. Mix them with anything from the East and the discus plague will kill the whole lot.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

I've seen bad specimens comming in being sold as stendtker by my many different people. Fish were all in a bad state so bit cautious. Anyhoo I'd like to see what u get. I'm in the Asian discus so won't take a chance. Best of luck and hope u do better than the last few guys

    Hi Quintin,

This is a rather vague message and I don't think this is clear and it is also not fair. I don't keep Stendker Discus, but they certainly arrive here in a very healthy state. There are very few petshops in SA that are capable of keeping and looking after discus in any case, so saying that what you saw at petshops was in a bad state, goes for all discus regardless of where they come from. Stendker are not a dubious source, the problems start here locally. What is persisting in the petshop supply of discus is that cheap discus are imported and sold at exorbitant prices. Of late there have been discus coming into SA from Vietnam which are of very poor quality, in terms of colour and type. There is also one very dodgy fish dealer in South Africa that is involved in many of these shaky deals that is causing problems. PM me if you want to know who this dealer is. The Vietnamese discus carry horrible bacterial diseases which break out when other discus are exposed to them, such as then Stendker Discus. So the general problem of poor discus from LPS persists, but making a general statement that Stendker Discus are poor quality in terms of their health is not correct and folks should not be put off buying them for this reason. If you can buy them directly from the importer and sideline the LPS then you cut out the LPS problems and then you have a much better chance of success. In terms of Asian discus, you have managed to get some of the Tan imports which are from one reliable source. Other sources of Asian discus are highly problematic and the diseases that discus coming from Singapore and Malaysia often carry, are much more problematic that Stendker Discus.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

My advice to you, aquascaping, is not to even think of pairs. What are sold as pairs may be a male and a female, but that does not mean they will breed successfully. It is always a problem to get decent pairs and in my opinion you should start with a group of 12-15 smaller fishes, raise these and then you will have a much better chance of one pair that will breed successfully, in other words will raise their babies properly. Besides the fact that buying pairs does not guarantee success, they will also cost you so much money that you can rather buy 15 youngsters and learn how to keep discus before trying to breed them, because that in itself is a considerable step up from normal fishkeeping and you need that experience before you can think of breeding them.

Just my 2 cents worth after having kept discus now for 40 years!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

You can find Stendker Discus by simple googling, but the prices will have to come from fishmark because he will have to add freight and clearing costs and these will be considerable.

@saaquascaping please send me your email address I will forward you a price list.
the smaller fish are cheaper to import and a lot more fun and less stress then the bigger fish and what PROF said them pairing off is better then buying pairs.
