Setting up a new tank for some of my Taiwan bee and Pinto shrimp (prt1)

tank is a 120*45*30 divided into 4, 1 canister filter filtering the whole tank and then the ug filters

    Added the ug filters

Added the biological filter on top of the ug filter. This filter media is exactly like ADA Bio Rio - 14L of it

    Adding Aquasoil - 1 bag (8L)

    Added some SL-Aqua bacteria powder

[IMG]IMG_7936 by Maurice van Wyk, on Flickr

Added another bag of Aquasoil (8L) and then some ADA bacter ball 100 that I crushed and sprinkled over the soil - I had some lying around, so added some more filter bacteria on top of all the soil.

Busy cycling the tank now - takes around a month or so.
I will update once the shrimps are in and do a second part

Awesome looking setup you have there :). Can you use the aquasoil on undergravel filters as I have read on the Aqua Soil package that ADA soil shouldn't be used with undergravel filters

Aquasoil was originally made for planted tanks and so not recomended for a planted tank but you can use it for shrimp yes.
Using ug filters for a shrimp tank makes the tank more stable as you also use the soil as a filter bed and when doing a water change the new water becomes stable quicker than not having ug filters in

Not directly, as I suspect it'd clog too quick, but using a base layer of pumice as Maurice did, should work just fine.

Hi Greenbean, purely for feeding, to keep food particles out from the main substrate bed

I’ve got a 3ft like that, also compartment, also 1 canister running it. I’ve downsized since......and emptied almost all my tanks.
Can’t wait to see how your tank looks when you put in the livestock

Over the passed three years spread over many shrimp tanks I have been using UGs with crushed volcanic rock as a first layer and then a variety of active substrates such as Amazonia, Black Earth, Shrimp King and Akadama with very pleasing results. Most importantly, I use that plastic fly mesh on top of the larva /volcanic gravel chips to keep the substrate separated from it, creating easier maitenence and easier vacuuming with water changes, works a bomb.

If I remember correctly I posted some pics of this on one of the main stream shrimp forums..
