Yeah correct, at 2 in the morning a few hours before I was due to leave with a couple of other APSA folk to Jhb for the Tropica/Loolilocks event last year, well that was the end of that ! Found it in the neighbour's garden, no ways they could run away with it when the alarm finally went off as they had to reach higher to try and take some monitors off the desk. More scary is the police and dog team did a search in the same property and did not see it yards from my fence

You need a half rack that is locked.. and then place all the kit there, next to a desk.. that is what I am getting for myself..

Was the computer back to normal afterwards?

We now have that Mac tower on a big chain and the monitors as well and have made sure the inside sensors now cover all corners.

The mac worked fine afterwards as did the internal drives, but the graphics card blew shorty afterwards, but might have been coincidence. That dirt on the Mac in the pic was not gunk, but fingerprint powder from the CID, so it looked worse than it was.

Trying to bring this thread back to it's origins....... "Refugium"....... HELLO IS ANYONE STILL FOCUSED????

    Mohamed
There might be a unique opportunity for you to do 2 things with all the above contributions sifted through.
By now you will have a crystal clear idea of how you want your Discus (no plants) Aquarium to look.
You have an excellent filter in the FX-5 and you are in among a group of people who grow plants.
Now one thing I have learned from learning how to grow plants (thanks to Trevor, The Lloydster, Slagter, and the mobb who attended Loolilocks last year while Trevor was finding his Apple) is that plants are a the best filter and water polisher.

So why not build a double-decker aquarium with the Discus on top and Plants on the bottom (as an augmentation to your FX-5)
You might have the 2m tank by now. All you need do is have someone custom build you a stout galvanised steel frame to support the lot and you will be getting the benefit of both "worlds" of submersion. There are also a list of guys on this forum who have cabinet making skills too, so you have the resource through them on how to clad the steel frame and make it look like a beautiful piece of furniture.
    Just an idea.

Oh and for the record - I only suggested what you should do - you made the choices and did what you did - its easy to tell someone how to spend their money - quite another to do it. :icon_study:

I had this very idea some time back when I initially started this thread but only stopped as I wanted to do more research. I've been really busy with looking after my fish and now have 2x1.2m, 1x2m, 2x90cm and 1x90cm (deeper) tanks at home. My 4x1.2 m tanks being custom built will live offsite. I'm out of space for now but as soon as my other place is set up I will definitely have a few refugiums done. In fact I had a 60cm tank custom built with 8mm glass for this and it's sitting as a container for extra gravel I'm not using haha.

I truly do not want to get into plants UNTIL I know what I am doing with them. It's going to be a whole yet before I fully understand them and their maintenance regimens. My 3 baby java ferns have however managed to attach themselves in my main tank

    OOOOHHHH COME ON NOW MOHAMED!!!!!!!!!

"I truly do not want to get into plants UNTIL I know what I am doing with them. It's going to be a whole {what?? you didn't specify}yet before I fully understand them and their maintenance regimens."

You were brave enough to take the plunge with the "King of the Amazon" without knowing what you were doing with them...........

How much have you learned in 4 short weeks about what to do and what not to??

Have you been to some APSA folks homes and seen what a real planted tank looks like?? - it's a love affair just waiting to be born...

MAN UP MO - take the plunge!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :icon_study:

Eh when I first joined this forum I had no experience in keeping plants and I had no inclination towards keeping them my tank went from looking like this:

    to this:

And this is from the huge knowledge base and advice I got from other people on the forum.

From all I've read a planted tank is more maintenance than anything else. Yes it's beautiful but algae outbreaks, CO2 canisters etc. hmmm

You are keeping some of the most high maintenance fish out there and you are worried about maintenance? I spend 45 minutes a day on my tank sometimes even less.

    Now you talking..

Your first decision low tech or medium/high ? Low tech would be the easier and more practical start option of course.

Your javas are a good start though..

Low tech. Low maintenance. That's all I can do for now
