Hi all, I'm returning to hobby after a 5 year hiatus. I've been pretty amazed at the massive leaps the planted tank hobby made in terms of technology, products and equipment available. Also blown away by the quality of APSA members aquascaping skills and knowledge.

The last great project I had was a 1.2m semi-Walstad style set-up http://www.apsa.co.za/xenforo/threads/1-2-semi-el-natural-update.2949/ which was mostly a success, but I did run into some anaerobic issues with the substrate after a year. For the next 2 projects I'll be testing out Dr Novak's concept of using a plenum to improve circulation through the substrate. Will also test out LED lighting and different substrate recipes.

The slow process of planning, gathering equipment, sourcing plants and prep now begin!

Will definitely do a very detailed post with progress when I start. Just spending my time/money setting up water capture and recycle systems at home with drought as it's no 1 priority. Also been reading 'Ecology of Natural Aquarium' by Diana Walstad again, especially chapter on bacteria and correlating the info with what Dr Novak proposes. I'm hopeful in setting up a system that incorporates both their studies/systems

Yeah looked at a few threads ... seems like for aquarium you need some iron source .. and then the rest is kitty litter in a pile with low water flow rate.

    Well worth trying.

The kitty litter is just expanded clay. The kitty litter in south africa is mostly bentonite based and might not work well. You can replace it with any other expanded clay source, I think akadama and bonsai grade leca might do the trick. As long as it's inert and has a hight CEC. For iron rich clay you can replace laterite with Seachem flourite Red.

good thing I have those in abundance ... but I need to go read this again .. is it just high CEC or the aluminosilicate that plays a part in the ion draw and exchange?
