Just to let you guys that may be interested in Altum Angels, that there is some available in JHB now. Got two beautiful babies yesterday and they come with their own certificates. Not sure on the rules of mentioning pet shops names, but you are welcome to pm me and I can give you more details. Will try and get some images of them later today. ;)

Post away feathers. We'd be nowhere without petshops, if they get more business they can get nicer things for us :D

Not bad, inflation wise. Back in 2003 one would have paid R200 each for wild fish. What hasn't doubled in price since then? And for tank bred fish, this is a good price. All I here about wild Altums now is "don't touch them!". I'm told they are shipped from Venezuela to Columbia where they are held in Bogota for days at low temps before being shipped. Consequently the fish arrive sick and never make it. :'(

It definitely looks like true altums. Feathers, how long have you had them and what size are they?

Hi Andre, only had them for 2 days so far, eating very well and they were in a good condition when they arrived. Calvin that got them for me is running one of the sections at Exotic and was there when they arrived and there was no DOA. From what I can find out very few if any came into the country in the last four years and it was with luck that they managed to land 14 healthy Altums. Bodies is about the size of a five rand coin ;)

    Thats awesome.

I think the last true altums were the ones that myself and Dirk got in 2007 I think?

Good luck with them, let us know how it goes.

First of all thank you for the good wishes Andre. The one little angle has started showing more color in the last few days, one still very shy but always hungry. Here a photo of the bigger one that is now changing color. Enjoy!

    Hi Telanie.

The altum is still looking healthy, but in my opinion it is a bit thin. It is important that you feed it well at this stage. It needs to have a constant full belly for optimum growth and a healthy immune system.

Keep us posted, these are definitely my favourite fish.

I’m feeding about 4 times a day now between pellets, live food and flakes. If you have any suggestions on specific food please all suggestions welcome. They have always been my dream to have on the tropical side hopefully soon I will be adding an additional two. Currently setting up a 4ft planted tank were they will be going to as soon as they grow a bit bigger.

Thanks really going to give it my best!

Long term plans is to have two 4 or 5 ft tanks filled with Angels (one just Altums),a quarantine tank and 2 small breeding tanks and shutting down all the rest of my small tropical tanks.
Keep thumbs for me, will update soon again.
