    Hi Guys

The new tank is finally up and running. All parameters are in check except for Nitrite. I think I know where its coming from, the wood. I had the wood soaking for about 3 mths and the water it was in was being refreshed every second day or so, but it still had that soaking wood smell when it went into the tank.

I hooked up my old mature filter but it is hugely under rated for the new tank. I kept it running whilst I did the new set-up so bateria loss, if any, should be very minimal. Yesterday I hooked up an eheim 2228 to assist with the filteration and will be hooking up another one next week. The eheim has new media in it, so it still needs to gain momentum with regards to bacteria. I am also using Microbe-lift Special Blend and Niteout to help prime the extra filter/s.

My question is this, can I use Prime to detoxify the 0.25ppm of Nitrite I have in the tank? If I double or triple dose it?

My fish have been in barrels for 5 days now and although they are quite chilled, the situation is less than ideal!

    Any advice/help is much appreciated!

Well on the bottle it says it can be safely doubled and that it removes ammonia etc, I don't see why it would be a problem...

Yeah I was actually wondering if someone has tried it before for Nitrite reduction and safely moved fish around whilst doing so...

So if I put double dose of Prime in the tank every second day it should work?

Prime is amazing stuff! It will Detoxify Nitrite within no time! Double dose it for the next couple days!

If its coming from the wood, is this because the wood is rotting (producing ammonia) or because the wood is just storing it? If the former, how is prime going to be a longterm solution? If the latter, will you run out of Prime before the wood runs out of nitrite?

I see the only workable solution to be: get a bigger filter and aerate more.

Done and done. Added another filter and an air stone today.

The wood I used (spider) was from my old tank but it was stored in a barrel with some mopani wood (sp?). I think the mopani wood was rotting slightly as I checked the barrel today and the smell is still in there. The tank doesn't smell at all. The nitrites seem to be dropping daily as it was higher yesterday. I double dosed some prime and added another dose of Microbe-lift today.

Will see what the readings are like tomorrow.
