    Hello everyone

It's my first time on this forum. I am Zaheer and I would like to start a low tech planted tank first. I'm situated in Weltevreden Park, Johannesburg. I have a 294l aquarium. I am still a newbie. I guess we all have to crawl before we walk, right? Any ideas where I may obtain quality plants at reasonable prices? I look forward to conversing with you all. God Bless :)

    Welcome to APSA Zaheer...

As mentioned...try www.betterweather.co.za for your plant needs...great variety, great quality and top prices! But first i think you should start a thread with your tank (photos if possible...we LOVE photos on here)

If you give us your specs...dimensions of tank, what substrate you using, filtration, lights and what livestock...we can advise you on what plants we think will not only look nice...but will work in your setup. No one likes spending R800 on plants for instance...and have them melt in 2 days ;)

Hi guys. Wow I'm amazed by your warm welcoming. Thank you so much! Ws Zain. I'll definitely post some pics sometime. I've checked better weather out but most of their plants seem to be out of stock. Any ideas? I need to start off with easy plants. Any ideas? I liked the hair grass and Anubias and some of the mosses. Are they hard to grow?

The "problem" with betterweather is that the plants are in such a high demand, that they sell out as soon as they become available...lol That's a good thing in the sense that you know the quality is high and prices are good! The cold temps at the moment here in Gauteng aint helping either...

Anubias and moss will grow in almost all tanks...you should even consider Java Ferns. Depending on your lights and substrate...there's even a number of stems you can try (all my tanks are low tech and they full of stems), but like I said...give us some specs so we can give you better advise...

Hi Zaheer and welcome to APSA.
I'm also very new to the planted tank, only had mine for about 5 months now and with my little knowledge I have had great success with Vallisnaria, even when I only used normal gravel and not nutrient rich substrate. They take a little long to really show signs of growth and seem like they melt away if one use Flourish excel but when they start to grow they grow great and make lots of runners. They help a lot if you want to hide something like a filter in your tank.
Amazon swords also seem to grow pretty easy as well as Anubia's.
Java moss really grows well if you tie it on to something like rock or wood.
I recently bought some Rosaefolia from betterweather which I found is also quite an easy plant. It's really beautiful when it starts to turn red.
Just be careful if you buy from petshops that you are certain that it is actually aquatic plants, I have bought some non-aquatic plants with my little knowledge in the past and now they are growing happily in the planter box outside haha. That's why I decided to try if I can to order from betterweather as you always know you get top quality plants.

    Hi Jax

Thanks for that. I'll definitely do so today. I'll have to find the proper thread in order to do so though. I'm such a noob! LOL. I need to start off with discussing substrates etc

    Hello Filip

Thank you for your motivation. You've giving me so much of hope. I need to start discussing substrates as a start. I'll definitely have a look at those plants as a start... is Better weather the only place that stocks quality aquatic plants? LOL at your plants outside in your planter. With a lack of knowledge, I found myself in the same situation previously LOL.
