    Hi all

My name is Dale (based in CPT) and I have recently embarked on wanting to breed quality Betta Splendens here in South Africa as I noticed that most of the Bettas we get here are imported. I have very recently had my first spawn after battling for months to get it right. I am looking to add more available strains in our market other than the normal veil tailed Bettas (found in 99% of all Pet Stores). Right now, my fry is about 1 week old and I alreayd have my hands full. :) I should add that my experience in fish is only about 4 months old, so I am learning as I'm going along and I continously research on Bettas and any help or input from anybody on this forum would be greatly appreciated.

If anybody would like to chat more about Bettas, please feel free to contact me or just post on this forum.

    Many thanks
    Dale

    Hi

I will take more pics of my fish and share it here. Will also take pics of the breeding tanks I have recently had spawns in. I will then begin to tell how you how to get your spawning environment setup, or least how I got it right.

    Thanks for the welcome

    Cheers
    Dale

    Thanks BF.

BTW, the pic as my avatar was my very first Crowntail Betta. He is quite old already (but super agrressive) and I've tried to spawn him but with no success yet due to his age. But I will try to spawn him again in about 2 months as I am going to condition him from scratch (although conditioning takes about 2 weeks). I also need to pick a tough cookie for him to mate for as I've seen the smaller females take quite a bit of abuse from him.

Any Betta :fish: breeder in Cape Town, is a rare breed indeed!
(I'm a poet and don't even know it!)
Good luck and let's hear more... Sometime the old hands make it more difficult for ourselves. It shows what one with new hands in the bussiness can achieve, using simple brainpower!
Remember to keep the air above the tank at the same temp. for the young
ones to breath warm air (around day 10 ) as you could suffer a lot of fatalities when they start using their laberynth with a cold air draft!
There are a lot on internet... Google is your friend! - Bettahub?

    Hi Gert

Yes, my fish room is constantly warm and the container I have them does have a closure lid. When I feed them, I remove the lid very slowly to prevent a quick cold gush of air.

You know the saying...when in doubt, google ;) Try bettatalk as well....good source of Betta info. I've found that a lot of info is pretty much the same all over the web, but any new breeder will discover things for him/herself.

    Cheers
    Dale

    Hi Toshi

Nice meeting you yesterday. The male is doing gr8, he settled in pretty fast in his new tank...started exploring it straight away. He is the perfect size and age for my breeding program, so I'll condition him for a month and then give it a bash. If he shows signs of immediate spawning, then I'll cut down the conditioning period to about 2 weeks. Although most Betta breeders condition their Bettas a minimum of 2 weeks, I prefer to do 1 month....high quality mixture of foods over a longer period of time.

Well I can recommend you get yourself a small tank with a small hangon filter for him. Don't think you'll spend more than R 200 in a decent setup for a Betta

Let me know if I can help you further.

    Cheers
    Dale

I think I'll do that, just need to sort out the money flow and the other fish tanks, and......

    But thanks!
