Hi there APSA members i thought it would be a good idea to post a pic of my tank... So that you guys can comment and give me some advise.

My plans are to get some red plants in and grow some moss on the nice driftwood i have. Most of the plants are pretty new and still need some good growth. Especially the fern on the driftwood :-\

Please tell me what you pro's think ;)

I think it looks pretty good. The plants are still going to fill out as they grow, so it will look even better! The amazon in the middle is maybe a bit too, centered.

I'm not too fond of the bala sharks. They do get very big, and are not suited for such a nicely planted tank.

    Nice man,

It all looks nice and healthy, the only thing besides what Ruben has already mentioned about the sword is that most of your plants are really fast growers, this means it will fill out really nicely but I hope you enjoy pruning :D also you may need to move the vallis further back after awhile because it will form a curtain pretty soon..

    regards,
    phil..

    Nice Pikkie,

What I can also suggest is that you try to plant some smaller plants in the foreground, that will stay shorter. Most of what I see you have planted there is going to get a lot larger. Perhaps I can help you there.

I agree with Silikube and phil about the bala sharks, they are not good friends of plants.

Other than that it is looking good!!!!!!!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Re: My main setup. 260L community

Thanx for the tips and comments. Really appreciate it. Yes I got the bala's about 5 years ago with my oscars because they are fast. But the oscars out grew them so they are in there own tank at the moment. I'm looking for ground cover in potch but the only smallish plants i could get was the anubia nana. I have all the plants we get in potch in my tank. Haha! So sad really. Looking forward to hear from prof about new plants.

Hey Pikkie! Nice setup. Why do you want to cover
    with moss?

    They really are nice specimens...

    cheers! 8)

Re: My main setup. 260L community

    Looks gr8 Pikkie!!! :)

I'm not going to mention what the others did, but here's my comments:

    1. If my eyes aren't deceiving me, it looks like the plants right in front (I count 4) of the tank are anubias and they are planted? If so, they shouldn't be planted but instead be tied to a rock or wood. Wish I could enlarge the pic a bit :p lol

    2. What's the plant to the right of the centered amazon? Acorus? Hairgrass?

    3. I think a nice red plant will break the colour of the tank beautifully. Maybe try and get Barclaya Longifolia and put that as your center piece plant....I think it'll just look stunning. You can maybe get a Nymphaea Zenkeri, but that will grow quickly and form huge leaves, which does look nice, but will block out a lot of light; that's why I removed my big lotus because it was just robbing all my othe rplants from tanning :) Perhaps a type of Alternanthera would also be useful here.

Great looking tank once again mate, can't wait to see your plants fill up the tank.

    Cheers
    Dale

Re: My main setup. 260L community

Thanks glad you guys like it.

The LFS order plants on monday so i'll go there tomorrow morning to ask him for a list.
@ Solex: Thats indeed anubia's infront but i have about 10 of them. On the left rock there's one tied to it. And also on the wood that you can't see. But because i can't seem to find small plants i figured i'll try to use the Anubia's. They seem okay cause i only planted the roots the rhizome is in the air ;) And about the other plant looking like a hairgrass, i found it in the mooirivier. Hehe... So i'll have a look and see if it will grow.
@ Rattail: I'll probably only try to cover some of the wood cause i like the natural look of the food ofcourse, and maybe it'll look nice on the 2 rocks that's in there.

    Ciao

Yup looks like it can be the same. It has some sort of seed flower thing at the tip of the grass, right? So it never grew Phil? That sucks cause it's pretty. :-\

yip its the same one then, if you can keep most of the leaves out of the water it will grow for about a year or so..

@ Silikube, I think so you find it nearly all over SA, but we'll have to ask the prof to be sure..

@Pikkie, if you can find a particularly marshy area thats slightly shaded there should be plenty or any spots where the river has been dammed..

Re: My main setup. 260L community

Hi everyone...I bought 2x54watt ballast and end caps from Angus and received it yesterday. And set it up today, after about an hour almost every plant started pearling even my reineckii ;D. Was so chuffed!! So what i want to know is if i'll get algae problems with all the light?
    Currently have 4 x 54watt T5 4000k, 1 x 36watt T8 6500k and 2 x 36watt moonlight tubes... Over 69 gallon (36cm deep too gravel)
And my other question is: Can i leave one moonlight tube on during night, for viewing purposes and the look? Or will it affect plants or algae?
    Thanks in advance
    Izak
