Well.. yesterday was the day I said WFT am I getting myself into.. you plan these tanks but when you build them.. eish ! that is one freakishly huge tank.

My bud Wayne came over to help drill the holes - -he is quickly becoming well known for being the neatest hole driller around and always eager to help over a dop & a chop !

Then came Willem with Gertjie teh tank builder.. very professional & knowledgable guy. Willen looks a bit confused here.. LOL

It will take 3 days to dry before we put in the chambers and bracing.. teh kids were exctied though !

Looking good so far! What are the specs on the glass? Stand: 25x25x? Looking at your stand I realy did over do mine! I did a 25x50x2.5 with 2 braces on the top!! Are you going to DIY a cabinet at the bottom?

Well the stand is made from 40mm square tubing, painted with hammerite, the board is just expernal shutterboard which I varnished underneath, the glass is 12mm. The bracing will come in next week, there will be 2 braces on top as well.

    Tank 2250 (l) x 750 (w) x 650 (h), sump is going to be 2000 x 600 x 500, 10mm base, 6mm sides.

If you look at the room, the tank is going against the back wall, the cabinets will be built so that it frames the tank, there will be cabinets on the sides going all the way up to the ceiling and finishing up the hood.. lots of work ahead, I sill have to work on electrica and extractor fans etc.

Yeah, it is a little bigger than I imagined when I planned it.. I knew it was large but now that it is made up.. reality hits ! It's gonna take me years to stock, which is the whole point ! I have promised the miss that this is my last tank so I thought i had better go big enough to stock everything I could possibly want.

Making it a tropical freshwater setup, means you can put so much more in it! (unlike marine)
I know you will make a couple of LFS smile!
Keep us posted and good luck!

I think the tank is a few weeks away from completion still, I wont stock until I have everything done. like the cabinets, otherwise it will never get done. I think that will give me enough time to decide on which way the tank is going to go. I think my 1.3m FW may be enough.. dunno Gert.. it will be an agonising decision.

    Good luck!
My wife's already threatening that she will be using my 2m tank as a coffin-display, when I am dead, with a couple of piranah's in the tank with me! Good luck - MTS is a Bitch!

You are welcome, but I have decided against discus.. too much of a mission in such a large tank, I am going marine on the 1000L system, I am converting my 1.3m FW community tank into a discus tank..

But pick away, I at least did some research

    Hi there,

Sorry, that comment added no value.

What I should have said was..' I have decided not to go with a planted discus tank, the reason for this is because the longer I researched the conditions required to keep healthy discus in a successfully planted tank, and taking into account the cost factor, the more I realised that it is not what I wanted.

Make no mistake the demands of very pure water conditions for optimal discus growth and colouration, compounded with the amount of research I have done in keeping that same water suitable for plant growth , I decided it is too much of a mission right now.

I have FW tanks but not a planted tank, as I have silver dollars, deacons etc.. also my decision has been componded by the fact that I am currently researching marines and have only being doing so for the last year and a half, so I have a long way to go, I just don't have the time to do FW plants as well.

My current SPS dominated SW system is going to require an upgrade in a year so the new stsyem is planned to fill that function.'

My current FW tank a 1.3m, has been steady for about 5 years now, I am slowly changing the conditions of the tank to suite discus, this is just a more intelligent route to go as it is so well established already.

FW tanks, plants & Discus does look like M.I.P. if you look some of the data available.

Maybe there is still some hope after all.

    http://www.tropica.com/article.asp?type ... tic&id=453

Might just take a little bit longer. :sch

Good luck on the marine Tank.

P.S. Pictures of your bracing please.
