I was just thinking that it would be pretty awesome to have a list of local breeders and what they breed. Maybe it could be added as a section in the classifieds? Where local breeders who sometimes sell/giveaway their stock can post when they have new livestock? People also get busy to post classifieds, so maybe if they've listed themselves here, we can PM / email and take it from there? I think this would be particularly great for sensitive fish, hard-to-breed fish, hard-to-find "pure" strains. That kind of thing. Or maybe there's a page like that already that I've just missed?
I second this! For example, I'm looking for Rainbow Cichlids and wild type (at least looks wild) Green Swords. Plus I live in Bloemfontein so you can only imagine how difficult this mission is going to be... There are lots of radioactive orange swords here.... and a couple of sickly looking rainbow cichlids living in a tank full of mbuna and peacocks at the LFS. I want to get some Rainbow fry example 6-8 to pair them off and get breeding pairs, which is what I'm interested in because I absolutely love these fish (dumb, I know, but hey we all have our own fish crushes right?). I want to set up a Honduras riparium river side biotope and guess what? Green Swords are from Honduras and will likely have one male and a couple females to act as dither fish and hopefully breed and drop some live into the tank so I can have the Rainbows occasionally pick off the small and weak fry as they would in the wild but leave the bigger swords alone. Trying to do this without reaching out to the greater aquatic community is going to be unnecessarily difficult.
Thanks @Waterman After getting no replies here, I was just about to start a site like this (I'm a programmer) when I saw that "FishBreeders.co.za" is taken. Our very own Jacque (@Deadpool) is working on this so we just need to wait for it to be done and announced here so we can all add the breeders we know. Yay
Also I think that it would be helpful to find a few fish of a particular species but you would probably find most guys breed for the fun of it or to maintain a stock level in their tanks rather than for selling. Personally I wouldn't mind giving someone a few fish if I had to spare but I doubt I would be able to supply large numbers of fish consistently.
Not exactly a commonly sought after planted tank fish, but I will have some L201 plecos available soon. Had some success with mine spawning over the last few months. PM me if anyone is interested. Would prefer to sell local in Durbs https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=2178
Yip, it looks like its still in progress. Just the cover page but no list. @Norio De Sousa do you have any info on the site that does not work? maybe you can start your own if possible?
I won't compete with a bud but maybe we can join forces? @Deadpool you keen? I can custom code anything we need.
It's not the website that's the issue...it's formulating the list of DECENT, HIGH QUALITY breeders that's troublesome. As soon as the list is complete, finalising the website will take a matter of hours... Just remember, just because you want a specific fish doesn't mean there's 20 breeders of it in SA
I would be very interested in this site once it is up and running. I was wondering though if there would be a place in your site for non professional breeders who might have an occasional spawn. I understand that you want to support ethical fish breeders which I am very supportive off. As per TheGrissom's comment, I'm sure there are a lot of people with high fish keeping standards who breed non-commercial levels of interesting fish and it would be great to be able to connect with them too. If you published your criteria it might help us to help you formulate your list. This site is going to be helpful to many people. I would also be interested in seeing your list published even in an incomplete state.
