    Haha

Will post up all the details in the coming weeks.

I am a big fan of the Raspberry Pi and it can do some pretty awesome things.

Plan is for it to control and monitor the tank. Lots to still do though.

    Cheers

Well it is not AI magic yet ;) you still need to do some of the work.

Are you planning on doing direct GPIO to the opt-isolated relays, multiplex with say a SN74HC138n or do an i2c port expander like MCP23017?

What ever you do on the GPIO do not go over the 16 mA max, I think it is, per GPIO or your RPi might get damaged.

Your relay board looks a lot like a SainSmart (clone) 8-Channel Relay Module, careful with them if the specs match this.

    • 5V 8-Channel Relay interface board, and each one needs 15-20mA Driver Current
Here is a nice write-up on some snags you might hit if you try do connect directly and stuff is not working as it should.

    Hi Ferdie

    Thanks for the insights man.

The forum link is very helpful. Thank you

The pdf you posted is swahili to me at the moment haha.

That's the relay. It's very similar to the one you described.

I am still prototyping right now so I am sure I am gonna run into a few snags along the way which is cool.

I am running a Pi 3 which runs 2.5-3 amp power supply. I am currently running 2.3 amps have not experienced any hassles yet.

Will post up more progress as I go.

    Cheers!

    Hatari !!

Just because the RPi3 can handle more current - does not mean you OK for the current draw for your GPIO's. Truth is your relays might also not engage 100% with only a 3.3 volt pulse ... RPi is 3.3 volt not 5 on the ttl logic.

I see http://www.hobbytronics.co.za/p/889/8-channel-relay-module-with-opto-coupler-5v ( not sure if that was where you got it form) has a nice link to this tutorial .. http://arduino-info.wikispaces.com/ArduinoPower

If you do run into funnies re-read both posts.

In short you can run separate supplies to the two devices - use the isolation of the optocoupler and reduce the voltage drop of the indication LED by shorting the LED on the relay board. That should give you a some extra voltage to switch the relay on fully.

Keep us posted on the progress, good to see more people getting into the other side of this hobby.

    Thanks man.

I have successfully connected all relays to the GPIO and all working via the app Pi Relay Pro.

Haven't seen any hassles yet . The app also reads the relay state even if I close the app and reopen which is good.

The app is really basic only enabling you to turn them on and off and relabel the buttons. But it's a good start. It's uses php to run the Python scripts, so.time to look.at some custom code.

    Cheers.

Nice .. you planning on adding a few sensors to the mix?

    Definitely.

I would like to get the power control prototype sorted first. The main aim there is the water change system. With that a flow sensor would be great so I can measure how much water.

From there, we'll it's all about how far I want to take it

    Hi peeps

So 4 weeks in this Friday.

    Just snapped a few shots.

All growing happily except for the HC and Hair Grass, growing very slowly.

Upped the lighting again to 72 Watts (from 54w) 6 hour photoperiod.

    Let's see how we go.

Stephen Fry is in with the other tank mates. Very hard to get a decent shot of him, but he has grown a lot.

    Loving it!

Found this little project that you might want to look into.

Have not committed myself, but sure looks interesting.

It is time to do that for sure.

Where do you suggest I start it?
