Well, yesterday while at Nick's I finally found a tankmate for my Oscar.

Our new addition is a Heros Severus (Deacon/Banded Cichlid/Severum) I'm not sure on the colour, as it interchanges between green and turquoise under my lighting and looks almost yellow in pics.   Nick, what would you classify it as?

It's not a matter of simply just popping in a new fish with my O, as he is a bugger at the best of times, so this is what I did.

Before putting the severum in, Steve cleaned my tank and we removed all plants, driftwood, rocks and oscar
The oscar was put in a bucket of tank water for about 15 minutes and immediately played 'dead' (see pic below)
I then re-arranged the tank completely, to confuse and confound the oscar into thinking it was a new tank and therefore minimising any territorial issues he may have
The severum was put in first, the oscar a few minutes later

The oscar immediately set of on an exploratory mission, found the severum and chased it around the tank till feeding time, at feeding time all my O does is eat... nothing has a remote chance of detracting him from his favourite pastime.

Lights off and they each found their own space, however when I put the kitchen light on last night, they were side by side.... hhmm :)

This morning when feeding, I put the oscars floating pellets in first - he takes all the pellets into his mouth at once and swims around till they are finished, I then threw in some Tetra Prima (sinking pellets) for the severum who came out from behind the rock and did eat a few.   So today I need to find some Hikari sinking pellets.

The severum appears to be less shy than he was yesterday, and hopefully will settle in over the next few days.

I can hear some of you muttering about 'quarantining new fish' ;)    I never quarantine fish I get from Nick - I have absolute faith that his fish are healthy.

Anyway, as always here are a few pics.
And no, I didn't clean the glass before taking the pics

Asmodeus should be awarded an Oscar for that stellar performance :potty:

    Couldn't resist that one ;D

Update: Bought some Hikari Carnivore sinking pellets for the severus... will see how that works

    Hi Kim
I bought them as green severum but looking at them, they might be the rare Turquoise.

Nick, I really really hope it is the turquoise, but time and lots of good food and water conditions will tell :)

Dez & Joburg Goose - thanks for the positive feedback and YES you should go to Hartlands - it's worth the trip

Henk, I have a 4ft tank - adding another severum would take me over the maximum capacity, as much as I would have loved to take both, it really would not have been practical.

That is correct, and believe me within a year we will have to upgrade that tank if we want to retain the current fish

Hey Melissa, as long as Botox has food he is happy :) He is in a tank with Gourami's and a Zebra Danio - he rules the tank and gives the gourami's hell most of the time.

Phew!, I'm glad the topic changed away from the 4m stunning tank, my bank account was having a heart attack and my wallet was shivering so badly I thought I was on a vibrating chair. :)
