    hallo all

I want to introduce myself to APSA because I see its tradition here. Please excuse my English, communication where never my strong point. I live in centurion and I'm trying so set up a Amazon river biotope. I bought a 450 litre aquarium about six months ago. currently I have a tetra ex1200 canister filter, 300watt eheim heaterand ,2kg CO2 cylinder setup and two 54watt t5 midday(6000k) ligths in my aquarium.its a bare bottom tank for know with a few pot for plant(cobomba, three different Amazonian sword's and the rest I don't know the names of).The founa in the aquarium is 6 black neon tetras, 10 neon tetras 11 glow light tetras, 6 julli corydoras 1 plecostumus and 1 black ghost knife fish. I'm currently struggling with algae so I'm waiting for a shipment of ottocinclus so they can eat the algae:)I also have a shipwreck and a 2 kg driftwood in my aquarium.

    Thanks
    Francois

    Welcome Franna!

How long are your lights on per day and how big water changes do you do and how many times per week?

BGN will have the tetras as snacks later on.

I do a 7 litre water change each day Monday to Friday so the total water changes I do comes to a total of 35 litres per week. My lights is switch on for ten hours each day along with my CO2 system with a timer. My bgn is +/- 15 cm and he/she is getting bigger fast. As soon as he/she start to seeing my tetras as a snacks I will get a new tank for my tetras. I will upload some pictures as soon as I get rid of my algae problem and thank you for all the welcome messages .

    Welcome Frana!

I think a 7 liter water change is a bit small... Especially on a tank your size. Perhaps doing bigger changes less often would be better. Maybe try 10% every second day. Or 50% once per week.

    Hi Franna,

Remember that if you do a small change very day you are not removing 50% of the nutrients at once because you are adding more during the week and only partialy removing the left over nutrients.

I do 50% on my 450L sunday resetting the nutrients and then normal EI during the week but its up to you to decide what works for you.

Thanks for the tips on the water changes. It difficult to do a 50% water change for me because I use RO water and my reserve tank is only 7 litre big and it only. Can use normal tap water or will it be dangerous to my fish? I have sera aquatan water conditioner and am willing to buy something else if necessary. My other cocern is the spike in my pH level. My current pH are 6 and my tap pH level are 7.5.

    thanks

I currently use Seachem http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Prime.html it takes care of the chlorine and chloramine.

Have you areated your tap water for 24 hours and then tested the pH.

I add the prime to my tank and then slowly add water at the correct temp straight to the tank, only once had a problem where the water was too cold and some fish got temp shock.

hello JP. Yes I have tested my tap water after 24 hours and the pH is still 7.5. I thing my pH level is down because I use a CO2 system. I'm doing a 50 litre water change today and will do a 50 liter tomorrow. thanks for the advice.

well I ended up doing a 1/3 water change. Now I am slowly adding tap water at about 100 litre an hour.

Franna, can I ask why you are adding RO water?
