I have kept Palaemon capensis, the cape equivalent, for up to a year in my tanks, they grow much bigger up to nearly 70mm. They eat anything and are found in either fresh to salty river mouths.
Are you sure here are photos of mine they have the stripe and dots at the bottom And if its not then what is it Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I have given you my answer as above, this is not new to science or to this forum for that matter and if you have been floating around here for long enough you will know that this topic with our local shrimp pops up pretty regularly, as new folk on the forum find them in our inland waters. Apart from several lobsters we only have two or three types of freshwater shrimp from what I recall, two of them I have mentioned here. http://www.apsa.co.za/xenforo/posts/126128/ http://www.apsa.co.za/xenforo/posts/77864/ If you get a chance try pick up the Freshwater Life Guide for Southern Africa, by Mike Picker, also discussed on this forum.
I see them all the time in the sea weed all i do is take a net and scoop them up maybe next time I go there I'll take some home Some how Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
okay cool. my brother caught one in rockpools somewhere, can't remember where would rather try keeping the caradina, unless these can be acclimated to full fresh? even if they can't breed in it
yes than hang about in the river grasses, be sure to collect them up stream in completely fresh water not brack at all, ideally in winter when its' completely fresh, well in a normal cape rainy winter that is ...
Well I've seen at least 3 distinct types in RSA. One in the rivers near Warmbad - Limpopo, one in the rivers around Hilton -KZN, and one in old mining crater rock pools off the Mooiriver in Potch. I am actually unsure if the ones from Limpopo and KZN were completely separate species. Never noticed them interbreeding
Ok here is the correct data from a recent publication which Dirk will vouch for comes from highly researched folk. If @Theos has discovered an additional species in our inland fresh waters then he is surely destined to be inducted into the Shrimpy hall of fame !
@Trev Pleco haha I doubt it, if people have looked maybe I just found two of the same or maybe even three. The ones from Limpopo were the same in size as the ones in Natal but had different coloring, some of them were greenish and others blue and sometimes with white speckles(very very light colourations) the shrimp in Natal where usually just clear and what I think of as ghost shrimp. The ones in Potch were smaller and had lots of little spots! They are probably all the same, I am no expert.
I'm pretty sure you will get colour and variants in their markings within the same species depending on where they come from, same goes with birds for example ... If you read about Caridina Nilotica they also mention cardinia typus...
