I just compared the price for Saltpetre today after buying it at Clicks yesterday to see what the price difference is. Turns out it costs R24.95 at Clicks where you are paying R32.95 at Dischem. If you buy at Clicks, you will shave off R8 and I ended up buying 3 x 50g so I have extra in supply. I'm fertilizing three tanks now so it goes a bit quicker than it would with 1 tank.

None in the town where I shop in - would have to go to Durban for that and it's not worth the petrol to drive all the way there. Unless someone goes that way and my mother's been going to visit my uncle in hospital - it's not a permanent option for me. For the Durbanites, that's a win.

Just shows you the type of margins some shops charge. It's sickening :ang4:.
It's the very reason why I make my own fertilizers from base ingredients. It helps to know a bit of chemistry :).

Has anyone seen any "No-Salt" recently? I've looked in a couple of Dischems and asked at a health shop but nothing :(

Is there perhaps an alternative potassium source for DIY EI dosing that I can use if I cant find no-salt?

    Thanks

I found no salt today at dischem. Ask them for their natures choice section.

@shihr should I dose 100ml even if I have a 100l tank or can I dose less than that?

@Heinrich thanks, I did look at dischem. Perhaps its just a stock issue then. I'll try again if I find I need it.

Take a look at http://www.apsa.co.za/calculate/fertiliser.php. That will tell you how much you need

Flourish trace? That usually gets done on the day after the macros. So NPK on e.g. Sun, Tue, Thurs and then trace & Fe on Mon, Wed, Fri and water change on Sun before dosing macros

At least that was what I used to do :)

@dart I did the calculations and mixed it in my 500ml bottle. Do I dose 100ml daily? I only did NPK the rest I use flourish for

@Heinrich hard to say without seeing your calculation results :). What is the volume of your tank?

In short you need to do this
    • get volume of water
    • use calculator to work out amount of fertilizers required weekly. *NB* the calc tells you the weekly amount
    • Split into three for the three days you are dosing
    • You can combine N & P & K, but don't mix in Fe with the NPK mix
That gives you three doses. So then do 1/3 of that on the Sun & Tue & Thurs

Or you can make a NPK mix to last a few weeks. E.g. to make for three weeks, use the calculator on 3 * tank volume. Then mix that into a single solution. However you may need to mix into 1L to ensure it dissolves. If you mix and there is a residue you'll need to add more water and adjust the calculations. Also it may be worth mixing into a volume that is easily divisible by 3 to make measuring each dose easier.

Does this help? If not post your tank volume and I'll see if I can help further
BTW please also confirm what florish product you are using?

@Heinrich ok here is what the weekly dosage for a 105L tank could be

    calc_week.png

So that gives you a weekly dosage. So the NPK you need to mix together is
you can mix that all in 900ml of water and dose 300 ml on each of sun, tue, thur. Or try in 450ml and do 150ml each time.

    Then your schedule is
    • Sun
      • Change 50% water
      • Add 1/3 of weekly NPK mix (so the 300/150ml as show above)
      • Add the full dose of calcium in one go
    • Mon, Wed, Fri
      • Add 1/3 of iron
      • Add 1/3 of trace
    • Tue, Thurs
      • Add 1/3 of weekly NPK mix (so the 300/150ml as show above)

    Does that make sense?

(If you understand that then you can create a mix that last for a few weeks at a time. It also makes measuring easier as you dont need to measure e.g. 1g at a time)
