Back in london, I made a lid for my fish tank really quickly and easily out of skirting board, hardboard (masonite, I think it's called here) and some thin lumber.

Basically, you make a rectangular frame out of the thin lumber (~2-3cm on a side is fine) just slightly wider and longer than the top of your tank; this will then sit on the glass edge of your tank. You then get skirting board, cut it to size (use mitres on the corners to make it neat) and you then simply glue and nail/screw that onto the frame. Small panel pins work well and are easy to hide. The type of skirting board I used had a convenient channel cut in the bottom of it, so I mounted it "upside down" relative to the way you'd mount it on the wall - this meant that the cover would automagically disappear into the groove. I simply used hardboard cut to size for the lid, and lined the inside with aluminium foil.

Stain the wood as you like and make sure to give it several thorough coats of a good marine polyurethane.
