Forgive me, those look like the crap tap valves that Nova used, after a couple of refills they blow. Three of my four have blown within two years, the last one just a week back. Understandably they turfed their supplier after endless comebacks and now supply a better non Chinese brand, but that comes at a high price of R600...

All the same a good deal given the cost of bottles and regs these days..

The tap valves only seem to go when they are filled up at the supplier which I guess is understandable, ideally one should open them under pressure while still at Nova to test them out, rather than getting back home and find that they blow as soon as you open them up.. Been there done that, a ball ache. For some reason Nova don't have a female stop plug to test them out, so you need to provide this or bring your reg with :)

I guess you get what you pay for. These valves cost around R150, the fancy ones are R600- a pop.
For 4 times the price you also can get a better car than a beetle ;)

Some of mine lasted at least four refills others not, pot luck I guess, but it's just a heck of a frustration when you get back home and it blows and Murphy also dictates its a friday afternoon. My one tap blew the second time it was filled and Nova replaced it there and then thankfully. I'm no expert with this, but could it be that Nova are overfilling the bottles and are subjecting these tap valves to more pressure than they are designed to handle ? I note that my latest new replacement valve has a blue seal on it and is called a 'high pressure valve'.

Nova are quite open, no pun intended, and frank about the dodgy valves they used to sell and are equally pissed off about them given all the comebacks they have experienced and from some of their big clients. I understand these dodgy tap valves were supplied by SafeQuip, the same company that supplies the bottles as shown in Wolf's advert picture.

@Trev Pleco - does the failure involve bits and pieces flying everywhere or what? :)

Yes, collected the actual tap handle two properties up, fortunately being red it was easy to find.

I always filled up at nova but had to pass a buck or two to get the valve sorted out, to be honest im filling up at a different place now and its refil pay and pick up later.

But the same place mentioned the problem with the valves. Wonder if nova are the only place you can get these valves from except for @RC

Trev is pulling your leg. There are safety measures in place to make sure these things don't happen and unless the main safety measure has been tampered with, it is pretty much impossible. Even if the cylinder was grossly overfilled or a rapid change in temperature happened, the first thing that would happen is the burst disc would blow, venting of gas (and so excess pressure).

These valves are perfectly capable of holding the rated pressure, we're not the only ones using 'em in this application. There was however an issue with a bad batch of valves, which I'm told have been recalled and no issue has been reported since.

I know I'm the one who introduced you guys to Nova (back then they were the cheapest), but I've also mentioned that I no longer use them, as their methods are a bit archaic. They don't have a proper filling station or pressure testing facility and as such are less likely to pick up on potential issues as we've seen here.
