Those look like Phisidae or commonly called pouch snails if caught on plants or on a gravel bed where the river flows slowly, the new plants seem to my eye at least to be watercress and jonksnoekkruid both is declared weeds seems you are following my advice (not the right stuff) to make a tank with only invasives:p:D:p:DBut they are beatifull none the less both should grow well immersed.

Hahahaha I wasn't following your advice. Well, if you look at it this way, these are free plants so if I stuff up, I can always chuck them on the compost heap and learn from my mistakes before buying expensive plants ;) Does that make sense to you?

Please be responsible with any invasive plant as many of us have seen the havoc it wreaks specifically in our waterways.

For reference you can search for the list of "no grow" plants.

ok :) Don't worry, when I dispose of them, they're going to be destroyed anyway.

    What about the snails though?

The problem with the list is there is no picture included and it is very long, there is no way for me to identify which is which, that's why I am here to learn.

The snails is local they are not sensitive and also not protected just watch out if you put fish with them cause they are known to sometimes carry parasites.

I'm aware of nematodes and the like - been doing a bit of reading up myself. To be honest, I do not plan to keep fish anyway - as much as the thought is appealing, my goal of the tank is to keep plants. I also read up on different kind of snails and apparently they all do one thing - eat algae, which is pretty much what the tank needs. I also know for a fact that they have to poop so I have to make sure the tank's cleaned properly on the weekly water change. If things get out of control, I am sure that I"ll manage it.

    Thanks for the welcome :)

Plants seem to be doing good after going into the 2nd week. I will most probably chuck out the parrot feather eventually, have personally seen how it proliferates in the rivers so might just mash it up and feed it to the plants outside (the river is too far away from the house to get it blown back there).

Thanks, fishy. My mom saw my tank yesterday and commented on the fact that my plants are doing very well after 2 weeks. I gotta say I am honestly surprised because this is my first aquatic plant tank and I'm just doing it as close to nature as possible on the exception of using liquid plant fertiliser and water changes.

I am thinking about doing a rescape this weekend - got sacks of riversand lying around after the house was done here last year. Just gotta clean the sand and then decide on how I want to rescape it. I really need to get the snails some food as well - there is just not enough algae for them in the tank, sadly for them but good for me.
