Yeah, that's not going to happen. Shrimp are no longer on any blacklist in the country. This is a fact. The new NEMBA lists have been gazetted, and freshwater shrimp do not appear on them. But, the department of agriculture does not issue permits for legal shrimp imports at this stage. Remember, when you import anything into this country, you need to have a permit, and the names of what you are importing need to appear on the "allowed" list. If shrimp do not appear on the allowed list, they may not be imported.

What that does mean for us: We are allowed to keep and trade in whatever we already have. We cannot, however, import them until a thorough impact risk assessment has been done on them.

    @ All who received CPDs,

What male:female ratio did you get? The reason I'm asking, is that it seems I received very few males (2-5 out of 30). I'm just wondering if this was generally the case, or I was just a bit unlucky.

Other than having so few males, my CPDs are doing really well. I don't think I lost any, the males are sparing constantly and I'm pretty sure they have spawned as well.

Just remember...only the dominant/alpha males will stand out so to speak. A lot of the other males will almost look like females.

Do yourself a favour and look closely at your "females"...even my smallest ones are showing a black gravid spot (much like livebearers). Law of nature states there should theoretically be more females than males...but you prolly have closer to 10 or 12 males ;)

After nearly going cross-eyed from trying to find the gravid spot on the fish, I have given up. But if I include the 'borderline' cases, then I'm closer to the 1:3 ratio. So I'm willing to believe you that I have more males than I might have thought. The thing is, they better man-up... I want pretty fish! ATM only 2 are showing their full color and they really make the rest look bad!

@PsyXe - you're SO lucky! My male's not paying any attention to the female! She's still pretty small so I'm still holding thumbs on this side.

CONGRATULATIONS! Yeah, my Orange Flash Female also ate her first couple of batches but you may just be lucky! Holding my breath on this side! Let me know how it turns out!

Thanks @Dinky! I didn't see any courtship behaviour (unless the male chasing the female whenever he saw her counts); I really didn't think they had formed a pair bond. I fed them mosquito larvae constantly and she was getting fatter and fatter, then suddenly one morning here she is with eggs and the male is relegated to the back corner. Today they have all dropped to the bottom of the cave which is apparently normal; she is still guarding them but no guarantees I know! Has your Orange Flash successfully reared broods since then?

@PsyXe - Yip! That's courtship! The male chasing the female about each time he lays eyes on her! Notice how he displays his fins when he does! Love it!

No, unfortunately not. I lost her before getting a successful brood!

I'm so excited for you!!! Even if the first batch doesn't make it, it shows they're happy and it's only a matter of time!

Lol! I can just imagine getting cross-eyed trying to figure that one out.

The best way I have of telling the male from the females is with the fin on the bottom of the belly - female fin is almost completely devoid of color, as well as the lighter colored bellies. Something like this:

    [IMG] [IMG]

I currently have only one female (poor soul) I see they show the little gravid spot in the photo as well but I'll be dammed if I can notice it.

@BLA Aquatics, any news about the pygmy corys?

Also, for those who received some amanos, I'm interested to hear what your findings are with them? What algae are they eating, and how much of it? How do their algae eating skills compare to those of say, cherries (for those who might own both)?

cherries dont do such a good job.. amanos are awesome for algae.. namely for BBA, thread, cyano, controls clado.. just be warned, you need quite a big army for them to make a difference. dont buy one and expect miracles! :p

Dude...no comparison!!! The amanos are machines...granted my tank is newly set up...but between the 10 amanos and the 10 otos...I haven't seen ANY algae...yet.

Will definitely get my greedy hands on more when another shipment lands...
