Hi there folks. I jumped in head first.Again. Did n bigger set up with some plants. All seems good so far except for some foaming that is starting to happen. Have not had the first water change though. Just want to run it by you more experienced guys before I start panicking and do something stupid that may ruin the tank. Will do a 50% change tomorrow, that should sort it out...right?

Oh and this is the attempt. Some stuff needs to still find the final resting space.

Nice looking wood, that been in the water before?

No clue why you would be getting foam .. is it sticky foam or does it pop eventually? Any oil layers ?

    Later Ferdie

I'm also interested in the foam, I recently had some for a few days after a large water change. No detrimental effects that I could see though.

Dude, you have a knack for this, or otherwise you've done lots of googling before you jump in - it looks good! I'd put the spraybar below the water surface though - less likely to encourage the foam, and I believe should lead to marginally higher dissolved CO2 levels in the water..

I've also had the same issue with foam on the water too, specially with the bubbles that take longer to pop.

Ok this is interesting - found a thread on this and will quote what this member commented

I did a search on APSA, aiming at @RoGe and @f-fish+plants, specially for those with oily surfaces, that you can actually get a small skimmer or make a DIY one if the chore is too much to keep on skimming it off. There are plenty of DIY's on home-made skimmers and I know I can make one for my tank, I just got to find the time and resources for it first.

And last of all, nice looking piece of wood, Burger.

I also got a oily/foamy surface, i had 2 big pieces of driftwood in my tank. I removed the one over the weekend and the surface looks better now( just my observation). As for the skimmer, i checked a video where the guy built a freshwater skimmer with a soda bottle and power head. Very easy to build but the only downfall is i see is its gona take some space in a tank. Will check if i can post a link to the video.

Thank you all!. It's a dream I have put off for a very long time! Yes it take a little bit longer to pop than usual yes. Moved the sprayer to below surface so it looks better. Have not noticed a oily film yet. Maybe my weary nightshift eyes just needs to open for a few minutes more.

Hi there Ferdie, the main piece has been submerged in a dam for years. Digged it out earlier this winter. Two pieces on the side is a avo tree stump on witch termites had some work done. I skipped some time on the soaking on those

Thanks man! Well yea been staring at some freakishly awesome tanks for a very long time. And figured yea that can't be too hard. Then found out about all the technicalities of ferts and lights and all the high tech stuff and got discouraged. So I focused on finding local plants that would serve my purpose. Hopefully. Winging it.

Thanks Clare. Do you perhaps have a link to the skimmer build?

I did find one that works with a canister filter so I want to try that one but I can't find it right now. Will post when I find it.

Actually found a clever one with an Aquaclear HOB

Now. Ummm. Asking with a real dumb look on my face. How the heck do I feed my shrimp that I moved from my little/tiny paladarium? The food just washes away to freaking every where? Feeling really stupid ha ha ha

What I picked up at the shrimp conference was that shrimp prefer food in the powder form, hence this gaining popularity, rather than big pellets where they need to scrum and compete and stress levels rise which is unnatural. The problem being that with powder you need to turn your filter off ideally and then remember to turn it back on :)
