Not sure if the material shop "Waste Centre" is nationwide but I haven't used filter matting from a petshop in ages. I go to waste centre and pay like R35 for a piece that is about 1mx1.5m then just cut to size. Lasts for ever. Think the material is called "batting" and is used as padding or in cushions etc. They have various different thicknesses available.

I once tried their "non-aquatic" open cell foam. After a few weeks the piece disintegrated in the sump. No fish were injured. At the time I never tested any of the water parameters. I was not sure if the disintegration was related to that particular open cell type foam being unsuitable for aquatic conditions, or if was related to the fact that the piece sold to me was of poor quality as it was a factory off-cut (Sondor told me this)

OR if the disintegration was related to my water parameters!
