Helloooooo fellow APSA members ! ;D

Righto... well as briefly mentioned in my intro thread I have managed to buy a 6ft tank which I believe has great potential...

The ordeal started in trying to collect the tank which turned out to be a mammoth task in itself ! It was FL$PPIN heavy... even for five of us.... :p

However we finally managed to get it "˜ home "˜ ........ :D

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

    My plan is naturally to plant it and I am not ashamed in saying up front that Im going to need A LOT of guidance from all the pro’s out there ! Particularly iro Fert regimes and the like... im tentatively deciding to plant around the edges with an open swimming area in the front / middle of the scape.... SORT OF like this, with the raised sections being planted;

Im afraid its going to take quite some time before I set it up properly and plant it though... so...

During December I set out trying to start fixing and patching up the tank, stand and cabinet... being second hand and somewhat neglected there was a fair amount to get done... however as Murphys law would have it ( and being in holiday mode during December ) I have pretty much only managed to begin refurbishing the stand.....

Here’s some pics of the progress made:

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

First had to get the cabinet out of the way and clear out all the rubbish I had temporarily put in the tank...

Then I had to get the tank off the stand and prepare a painfully small area to work in our spare room... notice the nice clean ground cover ( for now ).....

These pics should give you an idea as to why I thought it necessary to restore the stand ( surface rust )...

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

The bottom / the feet of the stand were probably the worst off...

And then the never-ending sanding down of the stand ( focusing on the areas with rust ) began.... the floor / ground-cover in this picture eludes to what a messy job it was...

More and more and more sanding..... it took me a good few days JUST to sand it all by hand ! :'(

Eventually most of it was sanded....

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

I then started painting.... This is just the undercoat being applied:

Undercoat fully applied and consequently phase one complete ( Already starting to look much better ) !

Im hoping to finish up the stand ( bought Hammerite as a final surface paint "“ so will apply a few coats of that ) over the weekend... maybe start with cleaning the actual tank etc.... either way I will try and keep everyone updated as I go along... ( With lots more pics ;) )....

    Looking good!

Refurbing a rusted stand is a PITA. I ended up using a wire brush attachment on the drill and using Hammerite Rust Treatment followed by a final coat of Hammerite

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

Thanks man.... I fully agree... the worst part thus far was by far trying to get the stand sanded down... at least the stand is just about done now ! Im hoping the weekend will be fairly productive...

    Looking good Apoc.

Did you look into powdercoating the stand? I've done that with all the square tubular steel stands I have and I haven't had any trouble with them rusting.

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

Nope... admittedly not... there would be an additional cost factor to powder coating though if im not mistaken ?

Will keep it in mind though, if I ever want to do another stand, because doing it how I did was a rather laborious task... might be worth any extra $$$ ! :D

One of my big stands is powder coated. I think it was R200... It holds 8 tanks in total. Had it for about a year and not an ounce of rust...

Your tank will make a might fine planted tank. What are the dimensions of the tank?

    Re: Apoc's 2010 Contribution...

Yeah, as Sean says, it's not terribly expensive to do powder coating. When I did it last (ages ago in PE), it cost significantly less than the stands cost to be built. It really lasts well too.

I would say its 1.8 meters x 50cm wide and roughly 65cm high...

As for the powder coating... well dam... its a little late now, but it sounds like an ideal solution... will definately keep that in mind - Thanks !

Roughly 65cm tall... Hmmm, you might struggle with lighting this baby... I'd go for really high intensity lighting for it...
