As the title says, I'm actually wondering if anyone has any species of livebearers that's not so common? Read a book the other day and to my surprise, there were quite a few spesies that exist. I know swords, guppies, mollies, platties, endlers and gambusia (which I wish I could keep). Anyone keep another specie?

Hi. I also started reading a book titled 'livebearers' by David Alderton. Surprised that so many species are not common at LFS. Attached a few pics of less common species.

Most of them are not on the white list because they are invasive, sorry for the bad news!

    Kind regards, Dirk

That book has terribly wrongly labelled photos.

We already have sword tails and guppies in the rivers around Durban, someone proudly announced on APSA that they had released guppies into rivers there many years ago....

Gambusia affinis or mosquito fishes have been released all over the show and occur in many dams and rivers, so another livebearer that can establish itself....

It is actually surprising that given this history, Swords and guppies are not banned in SA!

So other liverbearers will not be permitted, it does not matter how nice they look!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

No. Its correct. The lable is in the previous pages, followed by a description. After the write up comes the image, then it starts with the next species.
Image 1 is a Pike livebearer, 2 is a eastern mosquito fish, 3 is a 4 eyed fish.

Most beginner fish and beginner plants appear to have invasive capabilities. Livebearers are a classic example. If all these get banned, it would be a serious blow to the hobby.

Halfbeaks are a very interesting livebearer that I've seen at a couple of pet shops lately. Mostly albinos, which I don't like so much, but I'm sure the natural coloured ones also turn up occasionally. Look out for those!
