Decided to restart the discus hobby after 15 years again.
Any ideas as to where good quality fish around Pretoria, Jhb or Mpumalanga can be bought?
Contacted a some people advertising, but sadly :'( they don`t seem interested.

    Welkom Reyno,

Loolitube had Discus that came in this week and he's somewhere near Jhb. You'll find him on this forum.

What set-up are you contemplating? I'm also soon starting out with Discus in my 11 week old 4ft tank that's busy settling in with the plants and cycling etc. down south in Jeffrey's Bay.

Hope you enjoy the journey with this forum as much as I am, having knowledgable enthusiasts at your fingertips for support and visa versa encouragement.

    Regards
    Peet

    Thanks Shihr and Peet.

    @ Peet

Originally I planned on buying a 1.8m in cabinet etc, so when I informed my better half she kidnapped all my planning. Presently awaiting building contractors quote in rebuilding certain areas in living room.

Planning to set up a 2.5 x 60 x 75 with 1.5 sump and of course all the paraphernalia going together with it.
At the moment I am still uncertain about the lighting regarding live plants, from what I have read it seems that when keeping discus due to the higher water temperature it is not easy to have plants or let me rather say fancy live plants if I may call it "fancy" meaning moss etc.
My desire is having discus so I guess I will have to compromise.
Anyway, the guy building the tank for me suggested to go for T5 lights for the reason I can have the normal plants and should I want to "upgrade" and try other plants at a later stage I then have the better light option so ye at this stage I am still deciding which route to follow there.
Basically that is it, please feel free to comment on ideas regarding the above.

    ~Reyno~

You came off lightly, I almost had to have the antinuptuals re-written to get my 1.2m tank into the lounge!

You'll figure the lighting issue out as you go along. From searches on this forum it seems that there's not much difference between T5's and T8's. What surprised me most is that standard Osram and/or Philips Cool White mixed with Warm White's are not to be forgotten entirely, even under high lighting requirements. My next replacements will surely include these, if not make up the entire replacement especially considering that tubes become less effective over time and replacing them every 6 - 12 months does contribute heavily to maintenance expenditure.

Check out the excellent articles under the lighting section.

    Regards
