New Oscar Setup

    Hi All,

    Well I returned from holiday and my wife decided to buy 2 Oscars in PE ... I told her I could get them in CT but she wanted those two. Well they survived the ride home and after spending a week in the algae tank with an irritating botia they have moved to there new accommodations on Saturday. I must just add that I had some guppies in that algae tank as well ... they didn't last the night. But then I knew that was going to happen

    I'll post the pics later this evening for all to see.

    Currently the tank has two Red Tiger Oscars (still trying to name them) and one Bulldog Plec (Jaco), all three fish are healthy eaters and strong swimmers.

    Allan, did you by any chance measure the exact volume? I was never quite sure...

    @Melissa ... I think I worked it out to 113 or so liters with all my gravel etc in ... I'll do a calculation without for you

    I used plastic plants cause i know what oscars do to plants ... there is one live java fern in there ... they havent touched it yet.

    Banjo, I've managed to keep anubias nana, polysperma,java fern and an amazon sword with my oscar... he rips the anubias out occassionally - but generally leaves plants bigger than himself alone.
    How are they doing?

    The oscars are doing ok. they seem to be permanently hungry. but they are a bundle of joy. keeping us continously entertained.

    with regards to plants ... i dont know whether i'll put more live plants in ... I'll have to monitor the situation.

    Hi Allan.

    My brother also got him a Oscar that look close to yours.Same size.He have been feeding it Live crickets, earthworms and Leen mince mixed with flakes.It have grown fast in the last 3 weeks!!

    HEHE thats a good idea cameron as it rich in protein.I think a oscar will eat anything that can fits in its mouth.HEHEHE

    When I use to breed hamsters i also fed the pregnant females scrambled eggs.Worked great!

    Java fern seems to be pretty much indestructible by oscars. I recommended it to a friend a while back. The oscars played with it for a bit, and gave up in disgust as it seemed to resist all their attempts at destroying it. They left it alone and it established quite nicely. I then suggested java moss, which also did well, and anubias, ditto.
