Has anyone ever tried the Diana Walstad method of low tech planted tanks? Ordinary potting soil with dolomite capped with gravel. No ferts, no filters just a powerhead for circulation. Anyone?
my aunt in taiwan does something similar.. she has a big bowl/flower pot outside on her balcony its maybe a 80l what she did was add normal soil and some gravel, water lilly, and some guppies to eat the mozies.. she says she never feeds the fish just tops up the water.. i guess you could cap the soil to minimize cloudiness this method is done very often in asia.. ive seen this next to the temples as well.. very interesting how these fish can survive..
I have 8 tanks, 4 of which are pure 100% unadulterated Diana Walsted style - no lights, filters, or heaters. All natural. The other 3 have lights, and filters (that I only clean annually). Last one only has a powerhead. I entered one in the 2010 AGA planted aquarium contest and did not place last. Buy the book. See the movie. Just do it! 8)
haha..i wonder if that was a movie, what it would be about? "suspense, romance, action, potting soil, plants, fish..." hehe.. but saying that.. i would go watch it though hehe
Hello Boobs. Go read my threads elsewhere on this forum. It's all there. In a nutshell - mix 30-30-40-50 (garden soil)+(rose and shrub mix)+(river sand), set up the tank and leave it alone. Weak fish will die. Allelopathy will sort out the plants. When you feed, add a "bietjie vir liefde" for the plants. Simple. cheers 8)
