Hey Guys I have a rather large java fern with about 10 - 15 daughter plants on it. I want to get rid of it. If somebody wants it please shout otherwise it might go in the bin. Of course there will be no charge. Depending on location I can even drop it off.
Jared, if no-one else asks for it within the next few days I will gladly take it off your hands. We can do a swop, I have some excess Pelia for you.
Mbuna don't tend to eat it but it doesn't grow as well in hard water. Oscars would probably tear it to shreds.
Not sure how the osacrs would do with plants as I've never kept Oscars before. But they will be cool with Malawis. I suspect a big java fern will survive with oscars but none of the new fresh growth will fare well, your Oscars will think they're in their own personal salad bar Having said that, why don't you get the fern from Jared and try it out, let us all know in a months time if the fernmanaged to survive
So xmas, where can I collect. I'll really like to try it in my tank, although my oscars are fairly large, about 20cm each.
You'd be surprised what plants you can keep with Malawis. Check out what this guy has done: http://www.aquahobby.com/tanks/e_tank0411.php There are also more pics here: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... ank-6.html Pretty amazing stuff. The trick is that the mbuna can handle a slightly lower pH, down to around 7.4 or so. I would not try this with some of the more delicate Tanganyikans though, they need slightly harder water. Ryan.
Can you email me marinetnk at yahoo dot com, so we can make further arrangements. Perhaps I entered the wrong email addy
