Any thoughts on what the parva might require ? I'm predominately using Tropica as ferts, they have been planted for at least two years so the ADA might be loosing it's kick and given that they are big substrate feeders. I was thinking of increasing the iron or potassium .. ?
Hey Trev, looks like its the older leaves?. Reckon they just giving up or iron deficiency, doubt it as your other plants would show similar. Either way it looks great!
My C. parva does the same every now and then. The yellow leaves melt away and everything is fine again for a couple months. So like NeilB said it might just be old leaves giving way.
lol, that's just a small portion of it, it stretches the length of most the 1.8m tank Ok many thanks guys, I will try and up the iron for a month or two and then see if things improve. I hear you on the older leaves 'giving up' as this makes sense as leaves do not last for ever. My concern is that the yellowing has got worse the passed ten months or so and since this scape pic was taken, as attached below. I'm keen to restore the plant to peak condition for a new low maintenance scape planned for the big tank in the near future and where I will probably just be using it with fissidens. I really enjoy Crypt Parva and it must be one of my favourites, one's patience with its slow growth is certainly rewarded..
It could very well be iron. Although to add to the confusion, the C. parva I have growing in inert subs with very little ferts and medium light intensity does this less often than the C. parva I have growing in newish (less than 6 month old) Aquasoil with ample ferts and about the same amount of lights. If I really had to put down money though, I'd say iron is the culprit if it's happening more often now.
You should try some iron bottom and multi bottom ADA root tabs in the substrate below them. Might help? That tank just gets better Trevor . Stunning.
Best tank in the country surely and even better in person. You can't see the scale and detail in the pics.
yeah thanks guys, the tank has been going for three years now, but have not updated journal since 2013.. so will do so before rescaping, but tank still going strong.. seem to moving to lower and lower maintenance with each new scape. Next scape perhaps a karoo type koppie with stratas, fields of parva in the foreground and tons of open swimming/breathing space..
yes correct three+ year old cardinals, some big boys there and red embers, most of the shoal unintentionally self bred also some pygmy corries, about 25+ ancistrus and -/+ 70 amanos. tank 760l so fish tend to get swallowed up..
Try some magnesium. I had similar issues with my parva and adding some Mg/Ca helped green them up. Stunning tank. I doubt many people have the patience to grow parva to that scale. Those "massive" plants I gave you had been growing for years and had only a few growths but massive rhizomes. Are those offspring of those parva or did you get in others to complete the scape? I must dig up my parva and see what I have, maybe top the rhizome and try get some off shoots.
Thanks Tyrone will give it a go. Yes, I almost forgot about your parva contribution . The bulk of the plants were Anubias tissue culture plants, but I started off with yours. Interestingly enough your plants seem to have slightly larger leaves and not quite the same leaf shape so perhaps a different strain ? I doubt I could tell them apart these days having all grown together into a thick mat, but I must take a closer look.
