ok so I bought 2 of these I think they are a pair I hope my q is it prisilium altums or not my LFS say it is and I paid a pretty penny for them
I would take them back and get a refund, show them the picture of a true altum and tell them that you were done in. Dantum angels have a slightly different body shape and the striping is also much darker as seen in my comparison pic above. If you find Dantums, they normally go for R100 each. In future take a picture and post here first and we can give you advice.
Not to add insult to injury but the might be even be a few strains removed from a good scalare. Dantums is the closest you will find to altums at this stage in SA.
JP01 just for interest did you know the darkness of an angels stripes is also determined by the way it raised.
Re: Re: Help with fish I'd No I did not know that, very interesting. I currently have 2 baby Dantums and their stripes are also very dark and they have serious attitude.
Scalare is the normal Angels we find in the pet trade in many colour mutations, like the ones Prof breeds, Altum Angels are very scarce and much harder to keep, they also grow much larger to 40 to 50 cm. Here is the Wikipedia link to Altum Angels http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterophyllum_altum Here is the Wikipedia link to the normal angels we are used too http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterophyllum_scalare
Hanneka altums are just gracefull and can get huge. Try and find a true altum youtube vid and you will see how they just move /float differently.
Thanks guys flippen LFS hates these .......... Will let you guys know what he tell s me next time I see him
To be honest with you they look very much like my Peruvian Angels, beautiful fish and not too far away from the Altums either. I think that a fairly obvious give away on real Altums is the "Dish" in the face, the other angel species don't seem to have this feature... Can't believe how much you paid for the "pair" that is just extreme daylight robbery...
Hi Guys, I think that this needs some clarification. d4dfanwp, the angels that you have bought are not altums, and they are not Dantums, they are normal pearl scale wild type Pterophyllum scalare angels. In my opinion, not more than R200 should be paid for such a pair of angels. Then there is this rumour in South Africa, that has been spread by one wholesaler that Dantum angels are Pterophyllum altum angels. This is a myth. The name "Dantums" was started by Danziger Discus in Isreal. They show scalare and altum angels swimming together in aquaria, and they want the public to believe that they have crossed them, but what they sell as Dantums are what are also sold as "Peru altums" which is another myth and which are definitely not altums, see http://www.finarama.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2666&hilit=Peru+altums . In Peru, the only river system is the Amazon and altums occur in the Orinoco so there are simply no altums in those rivers and this is all a sales fad. Then there is another sale fad doing the rounds at the moment and this is the "albino Dantums" business. These are nothing else than albino Peruvian angels as well, see http://arofanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=505608 and also look at the Amazonas magazine on http://tapatalk.com/tapatalk_image.php?img=aHR0cDovL2ltZy50YXBhdGFsay5jb20vZC8xMy8wMi8xMi9vcmlnaW5hbC85ZTJhYnVqZS5qcGc%3D . These are also definitely not altums. Just recently, a pair of these was offered for R700 on TASA http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?19966-FS-albino-angelfish-strand and again these are completely overpriced. So, I hope that these comments will warn those that do not know these normal angel variants, beware of overpricing. Kind regards, Dirk
Where did you get them? These are mine. They were sold to me as Dantums, and are the best angels I've seen in the Eastern Cape so far...
Hi Firefly, Yes, your fishes look very pretty, I fully agree. But they are perfect Peruvian angels, and again, I am saying that they are excellent, but they are not altums. Kind regards, Dirk
