Looking for a big piece (For 1.2m tank ). Anybody seen a nice piece someplace in Cape Town for a good price ?
remember you can create your own design or size by strapping different pieces together or trimming where necessary.. many folk do this.. Big pieces at Sams go for 400 bucks or more... bargain bargain..threaten them with extortion, use any under arm tactics
Haha, yes we have quite a bit at our plant section, still wondering if we can display it better somewhere else as I also get caught up in the beautiful winding branches sometimes while getting plants out for customers
Never overlook good hardscape.. wood will take years to rot, so you can use it time and time again, on a variety of scapes.. If I see a good piece of wood or rock I buy.. may not use it now, may not use it next month.. but good wood and rock goes a long way..
Come to think of it, I have some big pieces stashed away in the garage I bought ages ago from Stodals. Don't laugh, but I had plans to make corner- / bedside-lamps out of them.I have a thing about wood... I'll post some pics tonight. I'm just not getting to that project so might as well let them go if you're interested.
Neville.. lets meet in sept, then I see the wood you got.. I am in Cape Town for two weeks, before going to Curacao, so we got time to meet...
Here is what I have folks: Some with the original price tags on still Its labelled as Mopani driftwood. Two of the pieces on the right of the table I have used before but too big for my nano's now. I can tell you they release A LOT of tannins and I used to soak a new piece for about a month at least, changing water every few days, before putting it into my tanks. Let me know if there is anything that grabs your attention.
Where are you located in CT? Can u pm me with details plz. Also, do you have any discus in stock? If so what do u have?
How much for the bottom piece in this pic? i would like to dibs this piece if its not too expensive...
That's some awesome pieces of wood. I know some people say two-tone mopani looks "tacky" in a scape, but printed backgrounds make it to the IAPLC top 200.
Why not suspend them from the ceiling with fishing line. That way the customer can see them all and view them from all angles. Not to mention freeing up some extra retail space.
Pity you guys don't live in JHB. I bought a LOT of Mopani wood the other day at R60/kg at Lifestyle Pets of all places (they are usually damn expensive!). If all you guys can group together I can buy some for you and then you can arrange for a courier to collect it from me? I can get small pieces suitable for 30L tanks up to big pieces suitable for tanks 300L up. Only problem is that the mopani is pretty heavy so it might be a waste of time with courier costs..... Remember there is a huge difference between Mopani wood and Spider wood.
We cant hang anything from the ceiling (like drill holes or put hooks in etc) so not sure how that could work, but a nice suggestion since you can see them in a 3-D manner !
Good choice. One of my favourites. It, and the piece middle-left, have been used so won't need pre-soaking. I noticed a bit of left over, very dried out, old algae on it so it would need bit of a scrub. I don't know if algae can spawn new growth from old dried out bits that have been immersed for ages? I doubt it as I used this piece recently as-is to soften some water in my prep-bucket and there is no algae in the tank where I used that water. Its yours for R50.
Also because clumsy 6 footers like me will end up walking into them and loosing an eye or something... lol How about putting some shelving 90 degree brackets on the wall above the planted tank area and hanging some pieces from those? Visualise using shelving brackets as giant coat-hanger hooks that will take the weight of the larger pieces. If you put quite a few up it could almost look arty...
