Hi guys. My marina glass heater just cracked for no apparent reason. Maybe it had been stuck on heating via a stuck relay within it though I'm not sure. I did notice the water temp was warmer when doing my water changes. My thermometer fell by accident so I have no idea as to what caused the heater glass to crack. I never dropped the heater or had it on during water changes. I have placed in spare heater for now. The marina heater is just over a year old and for it's price I'm a bit disappointed. IMO, one of the best heaters you can buy is the Eheim Jager heater. These heaters are sometimes hard to come by (I know Dorry's Pets have in stock) and their pretty expensive, but it's well worth the price. Any Fluval heater is worth the price as well. If you're on a strict budget, however, I have had good experiences with Via Aqua heaters. I'm sure some people can chime in and give their opinions as well.

Apparently eheim jager heaters have had a good review for functionality but expensive. I should have listened to my friend and bought one when i had the money because they keep close to the heating temps - compared to my dophin cheapie, having to crank it to 27 to get a reading of 22/23 in my cube for my cory fry. Ive tried looking around and locally and no luck on the inline type. So i got the Ehiem heater. Ive seen on Youtube that you can make your inline heater using PVC pipe. Any thoughts on this. Id like to give it a try.
if you are alright with importing items i would suggest looking at aliexpress. got my inline heater there for my 100 litre and its pretty accurate. the brand is sunsun and i think it cost me around R350
I've seen the sun sun on bidorbuy for less than that. Problem is that I've seen on forums where the relay on those types stuck on "on" , overheating the water. I don't want that situation. I would say in my opinion that if a casing of PVC pipe over my ehiem heater will be much more better made and more reliable. That's if I'm successful in making one lol. I'm currently in the planning of making one myself, or rather, I'm planning on combining it with my current CO2 reactor. From what I heard, they apparently work great. The problem, however, is that the part needed to connect the heater to the pvc pipe (the water tight fitting) is really hard to source here in South Africa. An alternative could simply be to silicone the heater in place, but that makes it sort of permanent. I'm planning on using a uniseal, which I will be buying on an online aquaponics store here in SA. (They label it as "Aquaseal") Look forward to what you will take from this.

That uniseal is the key to allowing the heater to be removable for maintenance. Can I ask which store you got them from. If you live in durban then maybe you can get 2 and I can pay you for it. Meanwhile I will be googling what the others are doing fiitingwise. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
The prices on bid or buy fluctuate a lot. Usually due to the fact that some sales are bid based, so it might start out low and increase. I like the fact that you want to build your own DIY inline though. Much more rewarding when you build something yourself and it works. Plus the fact that its an eheim
