    Hi all,

I, Nelize, have become part of the discus family all over the world, and would love to learn all I can. I've known discus for a year now and would like to go big in these species! I currently have 31 of them :D and will post some pics soon.

Could someone please help me with the ropes of Discus in South Africa? I see some sellers on local sites such as Gumtree, Hotfrog, Locanto, etc, but is there a general DISCUSsion forum, activity going on in the country? I would love to get to know some names of people in SA that know a thing or two about these lovely species.

I am currently busy checking out forums and good sites across the globe, such as SimplyDiscus.com, but I would like to support and engage in local communities and aquaria :)

Hope to hear from you guys

    Nelize

Thanks guys! I have taken quite an interest in breeding too. Will be looking into that. Some of them are still growing as you can see, and I would not mind getting bigger fish. My young adults are currently 10cm (from base of tail to tip of mouth) in diameter.

very nice, if i may offer a tip, when growing Juvies out try to go with a full bb tank, its much easier to maintain good clean water quality, just a tip, but your fish are really gorgeous .

Quick question for the discus guys, I'm thinking of a narrow tall tank about 140(l) x 80(h) x 30 (w)cm's. Works to about 300lt's?

Would this size suit the discus or should I try some other smaller fish?

30cm's is too narrow, in my opinion.

I agree 300 is too narrow, but I would also not make it 800 deep. That is unless you are a gorilla and clean the glass with very long arms. Sounds like a joke, but I can tell you if you have to clean that glass repeatedly, it starts becoming a major problem.

    My 2 cents worth.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Angels then? have a width of 300 to play with, thought about the height being a bit much since the tank will be on a cabinet waist high. Would probably go with 500 deep?

Any suggestions fish wise? This tank will be in our lounge/dining area! Tx

Angels carry flagellate diseases and although I have kept them together, and it works in terms of aggression, it never works with regard to the flaggellates. You don't see the flagellates so you think all is ok, but now that I keep parasite free discus, in other words also flagellate free discus, I can tell you that the damage that flagellates cause to discus are such that you cannot keep them properly, you are fighting low level disease all the time.

I say that after keeping discus now for almost 30 years....

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

So many other fishes are most probably even worse off, don't think that stops many others from keeping them,

Perhaps that how we manage to keep them for 30 years!
