i googled otos but got a few different names for it. this is from wiki...

As of January 2007 the genus consists of 18 species:[7]
O. affinis, Steindachner, 1877 — "Golden oto"
O. batmani, Lehmann, 2006[2]
O. bororo, Schaefer, 1997
O. caxarari, Schaefer, 1997
O. cocama, Reis, 2004 — "Zebra oto"[8]
O. flexilis, Cope, 1894 — "Peppered oto"
O. gibbosus, Miranda Ribeiro, 1908
O. hasemani, Steindachner, 1915
O. hoppei, Miranda Ribeiro, 1939
O. huaorani, Schaefer, 1997
O. macrospilus, C. H. Eigenmann & Allen, 1942
Otocinclus macrospilus
O. mariae, Fowler, 1940
O. mimulus, Axenrot & Kullander, 2003[3]
O. mura, Schaefer, 1997
O. tapirape, Britto & Moreira, 2002[4]
O. vestitus, Cope, 1872
O. vittatus, Regan, 1904
O. xakriaba, Schaefer, 1997

what exactly is this one?

I think the most common otto we get here is O. affinis. That one certainly looks like the ones I have in my tank.

not only are there so many sub-species but many looks so much alike  Huh

Normally affinis are miss labelled vittatus, mariae, macrospilus or vestitus.
Apart from the stripe the caudal fin is one of the best indicators, to me it looks like vittatus.

thanks all for your feedback. i have been searching for identifying characteristics of this fish. just found this website http://www.minifische.de/loriE.html
it says... Optically O. vittatus is easy to classify for the aquarist. The rhombic point on the peduncle at the the continuous lateral line makes it nearly unmistakable

coz im not a fish expert, i had to google every word in that sentence before it made perfect sense  Grin
thanks again everyone. i really like this fish. i have 2 of them and they arent timid as i thought they would be. plus they dont seem to know the word "relax" they are constantly at work eating algae
